On Friday, March 14, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Tyele Powell.  The warrant was issued as the result of Powell failing to appear in court on original charges of Fail to Obey a Reasonable & Lawful Order, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest.  Powell was arrested and transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and posted a $5,000 unsecured personal bond. Fort Hill High School Holds Honor Societies Induction Ceremonies

On Monday, March 11, 2025, the Fort Hill High School chapters of four academic honor societies held their induction ceremonies to welcome new members as well as honor the graduating members of each. The four academic honor societies included Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society), National Art Honor Society, Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society. Between the four societies, 68 new members were inducted and 41 seniors were recognized and received their graduation regalia. Season High Score Not Enough in Acrobatics & Tumbling Loss to LIU

Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team lost at home to Long Island 250.075-243.125 on Friday evening. FSU took a quick advantage, winning three of the four heats in the Compulsory Event, with LIU taking the Toss heat. DANGEROUS WEAPON ARREST

On Friday, March 14, 2025 at approximately 11:44 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Baltimore Street for the report of a person swinging and concealing nunchuks.  Officers located the suspect and identified him as William Morris.  Morris was found to be in possession of the nunchuks and placed under arrest.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and released on his personal recognizance. Johns Hopkins to lose 2,000 jobs after Trump’s $800 million cut

Johns Hopkins University announced it was planning to cut more than 2,000 jobs after the Trump administration slashed $800 millian in grants to the renowned academic institution. The funding for the positions had come from the US Agency for International Development, which the administration has gutted with enormous cuts. A total of 247 domestic US workers and another 1,975 positions abroad in 44 countries will be affected by what amounts to the largest layoff in the history of the university. The job losses will affect the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, its medical school and its affiliated non-profit for international…

Hooley Crawl Street Closings

Parking restrictions will be in place in downtown Cumberland for the annual Hooley Crawl.  There will be no parking or through traffic beginning at 10am on Saturday along Centre Street from Harrison to Frederick Streets, Pershing Street from Mechanic to Liberty Street and the MPA lot on Merchants Alley, Baltimore Street from Mechanic to Queen City Drive and Liberty Street from Frederick to Harrison Street. Streets should be reopened by 2am Sunday morning.
