Woman Arrested at UPMC Western Maryland for Disturbance

On Monday, December 13, 2021 at approximately 1:08 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to UPMC Western Maryland in reference to a disturbance.   Officers contacted the staff who advised that Joanna Wagus was refusing to leave the facility.  Officers contacted Wagus and advised her that she needed to leave the property.  Wagus still refused to leave.  She was placed under arrest and transported to the police station.  Wagus was released on a criminal citation pending trial.   ARRESTED:  Joanna Marie Wagus       AGE:  37         Cumberland, MD CHARGES:  Trespassing: Private Property

Issues Regarding EMS Leadership Rectified

According to the Cumberland Times News, county officials had given a local union until December 10th to substantiate claims that leadership of the Emergency Medical Services is unfit. Morriss Comments on Drug Increases in Cumberland Area

During a recent discussion with local officials, Allegany County States Attorney James Elliot described the recent spike in drug activity in the area as astronomical. The data shows that in 2020, narcotics investigators  seized 509 grams of cocaine, 574 grams of crack and 1,300 grams of fentanyl.  This year, to date, law enforcement has seized 1,500 grams of cocaine, 1,000 grams of crack and 2,500 grams of fentanyl.  Cumberland has a thriving drug market as officers report that while a cap of fentanyl in Baltimore can be purchased for $6-  it can be sold locally for $25 or $30.  Mayor…

ACPS Sees Increase in K-12 Enrollment

Despite COVID-19 impacts, the Allegany County Public School System actually experienced a slight increase in student enrollment in the K-12 category. The number of students is used by the state in determining funding allocations as the formula is based on a per pupil expenditure. ​With state and federal reviews of the proposed Downtown Mall renovation and redesign winding down- the project recently received a show of support from the governor’s office. Woman Charged with Virginia Avenue Assault

On Saturday, Cumberland Police served a criminal summons on Mary Carol Miller. The summons stemmed from an incident that occurred on December 8, 2021. On this date, officers responded to a Virginia Avenue residence for an assault. When officers arrived, the victim reported that he was assaulted by his roommate, Mary Carol Miller. Officers observed injuries to the victim. The investigating officer filed an application for charges against Miller at the District Court of Allegany County and a summons was issued. City Man Arrested for Violation of Probation

On Saturday, Cumberland Police served a bench warrant on William Donald Decarlo. The warrant was issued due to Decarlo violating his probation. He was originally charged with driving without a license and driving on a suspended license. Decarlo was arrested and transported to Central Booking at the Allegany County Detention Center. Power Outage Hits Over 300 in Cumberland

Potomac Edison says it may be 5 PM Sunday before power is restored to over 350 customers which lost power Saturday evening. High winds are believed to be the cause, and may be hampering service restoration.

Firearms Deer Season concluded yesterday, and while we don't have the total killed, we can say the season opened under windy conditions and ended the same way. That doesn't bode well for the final numbers at this end of the state, which were down about 10 percent on the opening weekend due to the less than ideal weather conditions.
