Heritage Days Returns This Weekend

After being canceled last year due to COVID-19 concerns- Heritage Days is back and it gets underway this coming weekend with activities and entertainment planned throughout the city center. The annual street festival will take place Saturday and Sunday and feature food and crafts vendors, rides and games for the kids, live music and reenactors, including George Washington. The event, free and open to families and children, takes place on the downtown pedestrian mall and Washington Street. City Receives 10 Council Applicants, Not Releasing Names

A total of ten applications were received to be considered to fill the vacant seat on the Cumberland City Council-  and Mayor Ray Morriss said a decision could come as early as next week. The city requested letters of interest two weeks ago after Councilman Seth Bernard announced he would be resigning. During Tuesday’s work session, the mayor described the field of applicants as “good”, but the council is choosing not to make the names public at this point. ACPS Bus Delays

ACPS bus #32 for Braddock Middle School will be replaced this afternoon by bus #58 but will be approximately 15 minutes late picking students up at school and then delivering them to their stops. ACPS bus #35 for Northeast Elementary School will be replaced by bus #57 this afternoon and will be at least 30 minutes late dropping students off at their stops.

WV AG Leads 20-State Push to Protect Bump Stocks, 2nd Amendment

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review a lower court ruling that, if left intact, inappropriately permits federal regulators to outlaw a popular firearm accessory and potentially imprison those who fail to comply with the new mandate.   The Attorney General led a 20-state coalition Friday. Halloween Parade Returns October 27

The annual South Cumberland Business and Civic Association Marsha L. Thomas Memorial Halloween parade is scheduled for Oct. 27. The parade will begin at  7 p.m. and follow the same route as in past years as it moves along East First Street, travels down Virginia Avenue and disbands on West Industrial Boulevard between Kirk Auto Sales and West Third Street. Fugitive killed in shootout with Hardy County deputies

The Cumberland Times News reports a man wanted by police was shot and killed Monday night after reportedly opening fire on Hardy County Sheriff's Office deputies attempting to take him into custody on a court order. Christopher C. Zenittini, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene following the gunfire exchange, according to the sheriff's office. No law enforcement officers were injured. The incident took place at 9:30 p.m., when deputies arrived at 477 Highand Springs Terrace in Old Fields to serve the outstanding capias warrant.  Moorefiled Police Department and the Hampshire County Sheriff's Office assisted Hampshire County deputies. Police Serve Arrest Warrant

On Monday, September 8th, 2021 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Nathaniel Andrew Morgan for 2nd degree assault.  The warrant was issued by in reference to an incident filed with the District Court Commissioner’s Office alleging that on September 6th, 2021, Morgan assaulted the complainant with a broom at a Maryland Avenue residence.  He was taken before the District Court Commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held on a $7,500 bond. Hogan Tours Flooded Areas as Local Area Cleans Up Damage

Communities throughout the area spent much of the Labor Day weekend beginning to assess and repair damage caused Wednesday night and Thursday- as the remnants of Hurricane Ida delivered nearly 6 inches of rain in Cumberland and even more to the west. Fortunately there were no deaths or reports of serious injuries but plenty of property damage to homes and businesses. Car dealerships in the Motor City area were hit hard while some streets and neighborhoods in Cresaptown, Georges Creek and Corriganville had to evacuate. Farrell Comments on Keeping Schools Open this Year

Maryland State School Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury said last week he expects no public-school building in the state will close this academic year because of COVID-19. Choudhury said there will be positive cases, but added that local school superintendents will do everything possible to keep classrooms safe. He said he does not foresee any scenario where we have to close a single school down in Maryland if all of the safety protocols are in place.
