Fire Marshal Investigates Fatal Calvert County Blaze

A joint investigation continues between the Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Calvert County Sheriff's Office into the cause of a dwelling fire that claimed one life. Just after 3:00 p.m., firefighters from Calvert and St. Mary's County responded to the 12100 block of Double Tree Lane in Lusby for a reported house fire with possible entrapment. 911 dispatchers reported the subject was able to be pulled from the residence before the arrival of firefighters, with callers reporting the victim had severe burns, and Maryland State Police Aviation Command was requested. Grant County deputy Sheriff injured and a man was killed Friday

Grant County man was killed in a deputy Sheriff injured Friday following a shooting incident according to West Virginia State Police. The suspect Jeremy Berg, 43 of Maysville was killed during the incident. Tthe Grant County sheriff's deputy has not been identified, was transported to a local hospital and was in stable condition with the gunshot wound to the arm.The incident happened along US route 220 near the Hardy and Hampshire County line. Due to the ongoing investigation, no further details are released at this time. 

The legal battle over Maryland’s Congressional maps continue

The legal battle over Maryland's Congressional maps continue. A judge on Friday deferred her decision about the state's newly redrawn Congressional map. Noteing that a hearing on her ruling striking down the previous map which was determined unconstitutional has been appealed by the attorney general's office at the state's highest court. The judge also pointed out that the new map which the General Assembly approved Wednesday is not yet been endorsed.The newly drawn political boundaries for these states 8 US House seats has not been signed by the Republican Governor, Larry Hogan.

ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On Friday, April 1, 2022, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Kathryn Jefferys. The warrant was issued as a result of an incident that occurred on March 27, 2022.  On this date at approximately 11:30 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a facility on Willowbrook Rd. regarding a CDS complaint.  Upon their arrival, they contacted the staff who reported that Jefferys had been in possession of suspected illegal drugs.  After further investigation, the drugs were seized and  an application for charges against Jefferys was submitted to the District Court and an arrest warrant was…

Low COVID Numbers Continue at ACPS

The Weekly Allegany County Public Schools COVID Update:  For the 7-day period of  March 25-31, there were no schools that met the definition of a School Wide or Cohort Outbreak of COVID-19.  ACPS had 3 staff members and 2 students reported as positive and zero staff members quarantined and 1 student was reported as a close contact.  

Bel Air Community Champion Dies at 95

John Decker Millar has passed away at the age of 95.   Millar had a long career as an engineer at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory.  He was also an active volunteer through the years, serving four three year terms as President of the Bel Air Citizens Committee and was the driving force in obtaining funding for the community park.

Myers Pulls Out of Council Race

Christopher Myers has opted to drop out of the race for Cumberland City Council.  Myers is the morning news anchor at WCBC, and the station would be subject to providing equal air time to each of the other candidates in the race, unless they signed a waiver.   Candidate Brett Bean respectfully declined to do so.

Police Serve Warrants

The Cumberland Police served a Fugitive Warrant on Caitlin Nicole Crabtree, age 22 of Cumberland, MD.  The warrant was issued in West Virginia.  Crabtree was searched following her arrest and a CDS smoking device was located on her person.  She was issued a Criminal Citation for the smoking device and taken to Central Booking where she is currently being held, pending her extradition to West Virginia. Police Book One on Littering Charges

The Cumberland Police responded to a business on the 200 block of Greene St for a male causing a disturbance.  Upon arrival officers contacted James Robert Michael Langway, age 33 of Cumberland MD.  Langway was advised to leave the business and stop causing any further disturbances.  A short time later, Langway was observed walking on Greene St by another officer.  Langway approached the officer and began to cause another disturbance.  He then threw garbage into the street as he was walking away.  He was placed under arrest and issued a Criminal Citation for Littering.  He was taken to the police…
