Labor Secretary Answers Critics of Hogan Decision to End Extra Jobless Benefits
More than a week after Governor Larry Hogan made the controversial decision to cut off enhanced unemployment benefits for Marylanders effective July 3rd, the criticisms are continuing and growing louder. Maryland’s Secretary of Labor Tiffany Robinson appeared this week before the House Economic Matters Committee and answered a number of unemployment-related questions. BOE Pays Tribute to ACPS Retirees
The Allegany County Board of Education this week acknowledged nearly 60 retirees from the school system who ranged in periods of service from 12 to 43 years, and whose positions included teachers and bus drivers. It was a much larger number than usual for those electing to retire, and Board vice-president Robert Farrell said it was concerning to see the system losing so much experience. In order to continue to facilitate vaccination efforts in Allegany County and to better serve the community, UPMC Western Maryland is pleased to announce that COVID-19 vaccines are now available seven days a week at several UPMC Western Maryland urgent and primary care locations. ACPS Names New Principals
ACPS Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jeff Blank, has announced the appointment of two new principals for the upcoming school year. Dr. Laura Holland has been appointed as the new principal at Mt. Savage School, and Mrs. Tessa Fairall will be the new principal at Frost Elementary School. Additionally, Mrs. Katherine Loughrie will assume the position of Supervisor of Social Studies, Professional Learning, Title IIA, and New Teachers, filling the vacancy left upon the retirement of Dr. George Brown. Cumberland Man Served Criminal Summons
On Wednesday, June 9th, 2021, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Chad Edward Izat, 36, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident which occurred on January 14th, 2021, in the area of Queen City Dr. During this incident, an Officer observed Izat allegedly purchasing suspected CDS. When the Officer attempted to stop and contact Izat, he began to flee the area on foot while being observed throwing the CDS items that he had taken from inside his pockets. Aggravated Assault Charged Dismissed in Bedford County Shooting of Civil Rights Marcher
An aggravated assault charge was dropped on Wednesday against a Schellsburg-area man accused of shooting a Wisconsin civil rights activist last summer during a Black Lives Matter march through Bedford County. The judge also dismissed a charge of simple assault against Terry Myers, 51, following a five-hour preliminary hearing.. District Attorney Lesley Childers-Potts withdrew a charge of criminal mischief. The judge then bound over charges of reckless endangerment and harassment.
