Cumberland Officials Set Tuesday Meetings

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will meet at City Hall on Tuesday, for a work session at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room, followed by their regularly scheduled public meeting at 6:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. A routine agenda includes a vote which would authorize 12 hour shifts for water filtration and reclamation plant employees,  A full agenda is available at the city's website.  

Fire Marshal Looking into Fatal Washington County Fire

The Maryland State Fire Marshal is continuing the investigation into what caused the death of Hagerstown man after a neighbor checked on his well-being and observed smoke inside the home. The 91 year old owner of the Manor Church Road residence in Hagerstown is believed to have died from carbon monoxide inhalation from a lawn mower. An early Saturday morning fire at an out building in the Oakland area did $130,000 damage to the structure, two vehicles and a UTV. Maryland officials highlight new health insurance subsidy

A new Maryland subsidy will make health insurance more affordable for young adults ages 18 to 34. Local officials and state lawmakers gathered on Thursday to highlight the new subsidy as Maryland’s open enrollment period begins Monday for the state’s health exchange. Legislation enacted by the Maryland General Assembly allocates $20 million a year for two years to bring down the cost of health insurance for people ages 18-34 with low and moderate incomes. That age group continues to have higher uninsured rates. The new state financial assistance will bring down premium costs significantly for people in that age group….

Florida Man Arrested in Cumberland on Child Porn Charges

On October, 29, 2021, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 700 block of Bedford Street after receiving information that Kymani Isaiah Tillery of Hallandale Beach, Florida was staying at the residence.  Prior to responding to the residence, Officers confirmed that Tillery had five outstanding Arrest Warrants in Allegany County.  Three Arrest Warrants for Violation of Probation, one Arrest Warrant for Failing to Comply with a Peace Order and one Arrest Warrant for six counts of Child Pornography.  Officers also confirmed the Tillery had an extraditable Arrest Warrant out of Broward County, Florida for Robbery and Armed…

FDA paves way for Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations in young kids

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday paved the way for children ages 5 to 11 to get Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. The FDA cleared kid-size doses — just a third of the amount given to teens and adults — for emergency use, and up to 28 million more American children could be eligible for vaccinations as early as next week. One more regulatory hurdle remains: On Tuesday, advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make more detailed recommendations on which youngsters should get vaccinated, with a final decision by the agency’s director expected shortly afterwards.

Winds, flooding impact Maryland

A strong area of low pressure will pass through Maryland today, bringing heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and significant coastal flooding. Coastal flooding along the Bay will be the primary threat through the event, and the threat will continue through at least Saturday afternoon, even after the heavy rain ends. That’s because tides are already running above normal, and a strong easterly wind with the low pressure, will push the tides even higher. ACPS COVID Update

WEEKLY COVID UPDATE: For the 7-day period of October 22-28, 2021, there were no Allegany County Public Schools identified with a School Wide Outbreak.   Mt. Savage Middle School had two cohorts that met the definition of a cohort outbreak.   ACPS had four staff members and 26 students reported as positive for COVID-19 during this time, and zero staff members and 64 students were identified as a close contact to a positive person.
