Woman Arrested on Assault with Knife

On March 10th, 2022, The Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 200 Block of Seymour St for the report of an assault involving a knife. Upon arrival, Officers located a male victim suffering from a non-life-threatening laceration to the chest. The Cumberland Fire Department was called upon to provide medical attention to the victim. Through officer’s investigation, it was learned that a female suspect had attacked the victim inside the home after an alleged theft of food items. Police Make Assault Arrest

On March 10th, 2022, The Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 400 block of Columbia St for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers contacted a male subject identified as Michael Eric Smith, 31, of Cumberland MD. Smith advised officers that he had been involved in a verbal altercation with a subject who had already left the scene. While officers were still speaking with Smith, they were called to respond to a second residence to speak with the other party involved in the incident. CEDC Responds to Business Owner on Grants

While grants continue to be awarded for downtown Cumberland –  one city restaurant owner is not happy that many of those dollars are specifically targeted for Baltimore Street businesses and properties- and not the entire district. The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation’s “Baltimore Street Comprehensive Investment Program” currently sits at $950,000. Hooley Pub Crawl Back This Weekend

After a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns-  the annual Hooley Pub Crawl will be back in full force on Saturday from Noon to 2AM. There will be a variety of music and food and drink specials at many downtown Cumberland restaurants, bars and music venues. A full slate of entertainers will perform throughout the day at supporting locations. The event is sponsored by the city of Cumberland and the Downtown Development Commission. Brinkley Recommends Fiscally Conservative Approach

The Maryland Board of Revenue Estimates voted Thursday to increase the revenue projections for the current and upcoming fiscal years by a combined $1.6 billion, which signals continued economic growth. The panel adjusted the official revenue forecast for Fiscal Year 2023, which begins this July, upwards by an additional $737 million to $23.6 billion. Shade Delivers Final State of County Address

Allegany County Commissoners President Jake Shade delivered his final “state of the county” address on Thursday- highlighting some of the accomplishments of 2021 as well as addressing many of the challenges created by the pandemic. Shade, who opted not to seek another term as commissioner, is instead running for a seat in the state senate. After 99 days, the MLB lockout is finally drawing to a close. The Major League Baseball Players Association has voted to approve the most recent counterproposal from ownership, setting the stage for a new collective bargaining agreement to be ratified, as first reported by Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extra Base. The new CBA will cover the 2022-26 seasons, and the transaction freeze associated with the lockout is expected to be lifted as soon as the agreement is formally ratified, which ESPN’s Jeff Passan characterizes as a mere formality at this point. Frost Elementary School evacuated with Smoke in the Building

Frost Elementary School students and staff were evacuated this morning after a report of smoke in the building. The Frostburg Fire Department responded to the school and determined that an element in a hot water heater shorted resulting in the smoke. They gave the all clear for everyone to return to the building, and the instructional day has resumed as normal. 

COVID-19 Numbers Plunging in Allegany County

The Allegany County Health Department reports that the county’s COVID-19 case rate is now the lowest it has been since August 2021.  Data show that on August 7, the county case rate was 12.58 per 100,000 people, and it peaked on January 8 at 289.5 per 100,000.  Over the past two months numbers have sharply declined, with the current Allegany County COVID-19 case rate at 13.39 per 100,000 people – the lowest it has been since early August.    The Allegany County Health Department offers free COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals ages 12 and older on Wednesdays at the Allegany County…
