Liberty Street Parking Lot will be Closed Tuesday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department along with Potomac Edison would like to notify the public that on Tuesday, December 22nd (weather permitting) the Liberty Street Surface Parking Lot will be closed for EV parking improvements. The parking lot is planned to be closed to parking all day on December 22nd.    If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the City of Cumberland Engineering Department at 301-759-6604.

Police Make Failure to Appear Arrest

On December 20th, 2020, The Cumberland City Police Dept. arrested Lisa Ann Haas, 55, of Cumberland MD. Hass was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the District Court of Maryland for failing to appear in court on an original charge of Theft less than $100. Construction on Rolling Mill Project Set to Begin

Area elected officials and project developers gathered on a blustery Friday afternoon in a plot of land covered with snow and mostly mud for the official groundbreaking ceremony to kickoff construction of the Cumberland Gateway plaza. The ceremony was held in a vacant lot between Cecilia and Emily streets off of Park Street. Cumberland Gateway — sometimes referred to as the Rolling Mill project — is a planned commercial plaza off eastbound Interstate 68 at Exit 43D between Maryland Avenue and Park Street. General Assembly to Address Kirwan Funding Package

When Maryland lawmakers begin the 2021 General Assembly session next month- one major piece of legislation that will have to be addressed and probably revised-  will be the massive Kirwan Commission funding package for education reform. Governor Larry Hogan vetoed the bill. State Senator George Edwards said that unfortunately the school construction funding bill- which can be tremendously beneficial for Allegany and Garrett county school systems- was tied to the Kirwan legislation. County Expected to Stay Virtual After Holiday Break

Maryland’s superintendent of schools said last week that she believes students should start returning to the classrooms for in-person instruction following the holiday break. The Allegany County Board of Education is expected to take action at it’s first meeting in January on whether or not to continue with all virtual learning, or return to a hybrid format and a gradual return to school for students. Buckel Has Doubts about County’s Current Tourism Pull

Without some notable attractions coming to fruition in the near future- Delegate Jason Buckel told local business leaders this month he has doubts as to whether Allegany County has what it takes to a develop into a major tourism destination point moving forward. Jets Win!!! Ty Johnson Scores Again!

Cumberland's Ty Johnson scored on a pass play and the New York Jets posted their first win of the NFL season with a 23-20 upset of the Los Angeles Rams Sunday. Bedford Man Charged With Theft Scheme

On Saturday, Cumberland Police served an arrest warrant on David Dean Howe. The warrant was issued by District Court in reference to a complaint that Howe pawned several items at a local pawn shop from February to April 2020, and receive cash for the pawned items. Howe would then use a credit card to pay off the loan and get the items back. It was later determined that the card that Howe was using to pay off the loans did not belong to him and he was not given permission to use the card by the owner. Howe was charged…

Twas The Week Before Christmas

With Christmas following on Friday this week, the hours that government offices will be open will be affected. Earlier this week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan designated Christmas Eve as a state holiday, giving those workers a four day weekend. Allegany County Offices will be closed on this Friday and next to observe the holiday. Due to COVID-19, Allegany County Transit has suspended operation of fixed route bus service, and is only providing transportation to and from medical appointments. Local WV Counties All Red Again

The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) has posted the December 19, 2020, Saturday Education Map that determines which counties will hold in-person and blended instruction. The map is developed with information from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) and vetted by the COVID-19 Data Review Panel. The weekly updates are posted at https://wvde.us/reentrymetrics. County plans should be reviewed for additional requirements.
