Unified Flood Recovery Application Available

Allegany County Government has released a unified application for aid to affected residents of May’s flooding. The application connects residents with a variety of disaster recovery resources in one form including appliance replacement, vehicle insurance deductible reimbursement, and help with building material costs. Residents can apply online or at the Town Halls of Westernport, Barton, Lonaconing, and Midland. Application deadline is July 18th.

Sheriff’s Office Investigating Burglary on Pysell Crosscut Road

Garrett County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary in the area of the 1700 block of Pysell Crosscut Road. The burglary occurred between October 2024 to June 2025, where a Brave 30-ton log splitter was stolen. Anyone with information regarding the burglary and theft is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 301-334-1911.  

School Cell Phone Policy Adopted

The Allegany County Board of Education voted to move forward with a new cell phone policy for students. The policy includes any device for personal communication that is not school-issued technology. Phones must be stored during the school day. Board member Dr. David Bohn thanked the policy committee, saying the policy has been long awaited…     “Thanks to the policy committee for putting this in place – it is something that has needed put forth for a while, so I’m sure our teachers will be happy to see this going through.”

Chief Ternent Out; Lt. Bonner Acting Chief

WCBC News has learned that Cumberland Chief of Police Chuck Ternent has been relieved of his duties.  Lt. Eric Bonner is acting Police chief for the City of Cumberland. This is a developing story and WCBC News will have more information forthcoming.

Bench Warrant Served

On Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Neroli Mae, 52, of Cumberland, MD. Mae was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on June 6th, 2025. On that date, it is alleged that Mae failed to appear in District Court for a previous theft charge. Mae was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.. Arrest Warrant Destruction of Property

On Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Seth Ryan Michael, 28, of Burlington, WV. Michael was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on June 14th, 2025. On that date, the Cumberland Police responded to the Union Rescue Mission on Queen City Pavement for the report of a disorderly subject. Once on scene, officers discovered that Michael had created a large disturbance and damaged a metal door before fleeing the scene on foot. Officers were unable to locate Michael at that time. WV AG Warns Of Post-Flood Price Gouging

Amid the deadly flooding in north central West Virginia, Attorney General JB McCuskey is warning of possible price gouging schemes. Price gouging laws are in effect prohibiting the price inflation of consumer items or services more than 10%. McCuskey urges those who see increased prices or believe they have been overcharged to file a price-gouging complaint at ww.wvago.com.

Ribbon Cutting Friday For Updated Walmart

The Walmart Supercenter in LaVale is holding a ribbon cutting Friday at 8 am to celebrate the store’s remodel.  Store Manager, Brad Leydig, told WCBC their location is the first in the state to be updated this year and they’ve hired 65 new employees.  The remodel includes bringing back more cashiers, revamping the pharmacy and expanding to enable digital orders to be processed more efficiently…     “That was the biggest investment in capitol and expanding the actual building.  The biggest impact to our customers is probably going to be that front end. Assault, False Imprisonment Arrest

On Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the Sleep Inn on Ali Ghan Rd for the report of an assault. Once on scene, officers contacted the complainant who advised that their child had been assaulted by a female subject. During the investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had struck the child in the face and locked them in a bathroom. As a result, Latoya Holt, 41, of Keyser WV, was placed under arrest. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center….

County Looking At Options On Water System

The Allegany County Commissioners are exploring options in relation to the Bel Air water system. County officials had a brief meeting with new owners American Water, but little information came of it since the sale is not yet finalized. County Administrator Jason Bennett tells WCBC calls for the county to invoke eminent domain are being looked at, but that would not necessarily be the solution…     “That’s a very – one, legally painful process. Two – there’s no guarantee we can help the residents because if we have to pay, I don’t even want to guess at a number…
