Today, February 4, 2025, E. Oldtown Road will be closed from Winifred Road to White Oaks Avenue to repair a water leak.    

Furnace Street Assault and Reckless Endangerment arrest

On Monday, February 3rd, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 400 block of Furnace St for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers contacted the victim of the alleged assault. The victim stated that they and their children were playing outside when they were approached by a female individual. The female subject then began to yell at the victim and family. The female subject then produced a can of wasp killer and sprayed the victim in the face. Queen City Drive Trespassing Citation

On Monday, February 3rd, 2025, an officer with the Cumberland Police Department observed a subject in the area of Queen City Drive walking the CSX tracks. The subject was stopped and identified as James William Roy, 41, of Cumberland MD. New Educational Video Explains Abuse and Neglect Procedure

The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia today released a new educational video designed to outline and explain the process followed in child abuse and neglect cases. Like the process itself, the video emphasizes the need to protect children and provide them with a safe environment while also providing parents information about how to work toward a potential goal of reunifying their families if possible. “Child abuse and neglect cases are the most critical and important cases we deal with in the legal system,” said Chief Justice Bill Wooton. “They can also be the most complex and emotionally fraught…

Supreme Court of Maryland Upholding the Child Victims Act of 2023

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the below statement today after the Supreme Court of Maryland, in a 4 – 3 ruling, upheld the Child Victims Act (CVA) of 2023 as constitutional. The Child Victims Act eliminates restrictions that had prevented many victims of child sexual abuse from seeking justice as adults. "Today's decision by the Supreme Court of Maryland confirms that the passage of time will not prevent survivors from seeking justice for sexual abuse they suffered as children. I am proud of the role our office played in defending this landmark statute."

GAP Trail Dog Drama Continues

The back and forth over dogs on the GAP Trail continues as an ethics complaint has been filed.  Christopher Allison of Carroll Street in Cumberland filed the complaint with the Allegany County Ethics Commission claiming mistreatment from county attorney Lee Beeman and two law enforcement officers.  Both runners and bicyclists have complained about large dogs chasing and threatening them on the trail and hearings have been held in the ongoing case.

Teacher of the Year Recognized at Bishop Walsh

Bishop Walsh School recognized its Teacher of the Year at last week’s Catholic Schools Week celebration.  First grade teacher Sally Maybury received the honor at a school assembly.  Mrs. Maybury is in her second year at Bishop Walsh.  She was congratulated by Principal Jennifer Flinn and Assistant Principal Raleigh Davis.

Valentine’s Day #1 for Flower Shops

Valentine’s Day is big business in the United States.  It is celebrated on February 14 and commemorates the martyrdom of St. Valentine in the third century.  Tim Wotring of Flowerland confirmed that it is the biggest single day for his business.  Wotring added that the week leading up to Mother's Day is strong, along with December for Christmas sales.

Mock Trial Season Underway

The 2025 mock trial season is underway.  Allegany High School is the defending state champion.  Tony Orndoff is the coach at Bishop Walsh and he told WCBC News that this year’s case involves harassment vs. free speech issues.  Schools participating include Fort Hill, Mountain Ridge, Allegany, Bishop Walsh, Northern, and Southern.  Each school has ten local matches prior to the state playoffs.
