BENCH WARRANT SERVED On Saturday, June 21, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a Circuit Court bench warrant on Travis Shaffer. The warrant was issued as the result of Shaffer violating pre-trial release conditions on an original charge of CDS: Possess with Intent to Distribute. Shaffer was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he is currently being held without bond pending his appearance before the court. Rotary Club Accepting Funding Requests
The Cumberland Rotary Club is accepting allocation requests from local organizations and programs. The deadline to apply is July 31. In the past year, examples of groups receiving Rotary funds include the Allegany Arts Council, the Allegany County Animal Shelter, the 4-H Robotics Club, and the Embassy Theatre.
Service for the Unborn This Afternoon
The Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization will hold its annual memorial service for the unborn at 2 p.m. this afternoon. The service will take place at Davis Memorial Cemetery on Uhl Highway.
CDS Arrest on Frederick St.
On Friday, June 20, 2025 at approximately 9:35 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Frederick Street. A police K-9 was requested and utilized which resulted in a positive alert for the odor of drugs. A search of the vehicle was conducted and one of the occupants, Jennifer Bible, was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine. Bible was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. She was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. Miller Finishes 2nd at New Balance Nationals
Recent Allegany High School graduate Avery Miller finished 2nd in the heptathlon at the New Balance Nationals in Philadelphia, PA on Thursday. Miller, who set records throughout her career at Allegany, finished the event with 5,290 points, 292 points behind winner Yuliya Maslouskaya, who finished behind Miler in 2024. Last year, Miller’s 5,057 points were enough to win the competition. This year, she led the field in the 200-meter dash and the shot put. Miller will continue her academic and athletic careers at Penn State in the fall.
WV Finalizing Settlement with Purdue Pharma
West Virginia Attorney General JB McCuskey announced earlier this week that the state has agreed to sign on to a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler Family. Fifty-five US states and territories are part of the settlement, with Maryland set to receive up to $90 million, and West Virginia set to receive as much as $53 million from the settlement, but on an accelerated payment schedule due to the disproportionate impact opioid drugs have had on the state, according to McCuskey. City of Cumberland Statement Regarding News Stories
The story reported by a local radio station and posted on social media regarding Chief Chuck Ternent’s employment status with the City of Cumberland needs correction and clarification. After 32 years of loyal service to the City of Cumberland and its citizens, Chief Ternent has, for some time, been contemplating retirement in order to pursue other career opportunities which have become available. Recently, Chief Ternent has been off work addressing some health issues. In his absence, Lt. Eric Bonner will serve as Acting Chief.
Fugitive From Justice Arrest
On Thursday June 19th,2025 the Cumberland Police Department arrested Aaron Lee Dersin, 37, of Cumberland, MD. Dersin was arrested as a fugitive from justice when it was learned that he had an active arrest warrant issued for him in Mineral County, WV. The original West Virginia Warrant charges Dersin with felony conspiracy. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. The American Red Cross is always looking for individuals willing to give blood and during summer vacation season there is usually a slump in giving due to pattern changes in regular givers, according to Jason Keeling from the American Red Cross… “The need for blood is constant, but there are certain times throughout the year where making a donation is even more needed. During holiday seasons and summer, people tend to be on vacation, schools are out, and so places that we normally collect may not be as active.”
