High Winds Close Bay Bridge

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge was closed for a time Wednesday afternoon due to high winds.   Winds were clocked at over 55 mph at the site of the two-bridge span.  The closure lasted from around 1 p.m. until 2:40 p.m.

Fluoride Opponents Speak at Council Meeting

Public comment speakers at the Cumberland Mayor and Council meeting on Tuesday raised the subject of removing fluoride from the city’s water system. Criminal Summons Served

On March 4, 2025, an Officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop after observing a traffic violation in the Area of Centre St. The Officer then made contact with the driver and passenger. After the traffic stop was concluded, the Officers asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle. Officers then conducted a consent search of the vehicle and located suspected Crack cocaine. Man Charged With Arson Now Has Additional Charges

 A Cumberland man incarcerated at the Allegany County Detention Center for arson was served a criminal summons for damaging a fire sprinkler that led to $65,000 in damages at the YMCA where he lived. The incident occurred after setting his apartment on fire and before he was charged with arson. Staff told investigators that the resident, Donald Lee Martin Jr. intentionally damaged a fire sprinkler located in a stairwell on February 15. The vandalism led to severe flooding in the administrative section of the business, causing extensive property damage.

Wyer Announced as Garrett County Airport Manager

Adison Wyer has been named the new Garrett County Airport manager.  Wyer brings both technical expertise and a deep-rooted passion for aviation to the role, as well as leadership and operational experience from his background as a trooper with the Maryland State Police.  Garrett Airport serves as a hub for flight training, sightseeing over Deep Creek Lake, and essential services supporting military, law enforcement, and DNR.

Police Chief Updates On Bones Found On Independence Street

Cumberland Police are continuing their investigation into possibly human bones found off of Independence Street in the City.  A person exploring woods in the vicinity Tuesday came across the bones and alerted law enforcement.  Police Chief Chuck Ternent said the bones and some clothing were collected as evidence and are being analyzed.  The Chief said there could possibly be a connection to a missing person’s case…      “It’s too early to tell this early in the investigation, but we do have Larry Aleshire who’s been missing for quite a long time so it is a possibility.”

City Council Leverages Favorable Bond Rating

The West Virginia legislature is one third of the way through their session in Charleston and Democratic Senators and House members would like to make some progress on bills.  The Dems met with reporters on Monday to address their goals for the session and their frustration.
