On 01/17/25, members of the ACSO, Cumberland Police, and MSP conducted a joint operation to arrest subjects in Allegany County who had open arrest warrants. On January 22, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were on routine patrol in the area of Queen City Drive when they observed a male crossing train tracks in a conspicuously posted no-trespassing area. Officers approached the male who was identified as Malik Freeman. Freeman advised he did not see the sign before crossing. Freeman was issued a criminal citation for trespassing and released on screen pending his trial. Arrest: Malik Bernard Freeman, age 28, Cumberland, Maryland. Charge: Trespassing Posted Property.
On January 21, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 600 Block of Greene Street for the report of an assault. While conducting the investigation, Brandon Paige obstructed and hindered officers. An application for charges was submitted to the Allegany County Commissioner’s office which yielded a criminal summons. The University System of Maryland Chancellor, Jay Perman, announced on Wednesday afternoon that Dr. Darlene Brannigan-Smith would fill the role as Interim President for Frostburg State University. Current President Ron Nowaczyk will leave his position at the end of the month. Dr. Smith has worked at the University of Baltimore in roles including executive vice president and provost. Smith takes over the role on March 10. Perman shared that the University System plans a national search for a permanent leader.
On January 22, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 13000 Block of Ali Ghan Road for the report of an impaired driver. Upon arrival, Officers observed the operator, Carson Driver, in control of the vehicle in the parking lot. After completing the investigation, Driver was arrested for driving under the influence. On January 22, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were on routine foot patrol in the area of the Underpass on Baltimore Street when they observed a male who was known to have multiple outstanding warrants. Officers approached the male who then provided a false name to avoid apprehension. As a result, John Barker was arrested for the outstanding warrants. A search of his person incident to arrest yielded controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. On January 22, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 400 Block of Long Street for the destruction of property complaint. Upon arrival, officers learned that a male, who was later identified as Duane Crowe, was observed destroying a parked vehicle with a baseball bat. When the victim attempted to confront Crowe, he raised the bat and threatened to strike the victim with it before fleeing the area.
