Officials Investigate Mount Savage Fire

A fire that caused an estimated $125,000 damage to a Mount Savage home Friday evening remains under investigation, the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said.  The blaze at 13009 Irving Street started about 5:30 p.m. Investigators said residents escaped without injury after a passerby alerted them to a fire under a deck.  More than 50 firefighters battled the fire at the home owned by Lorri Ann Melon. One firefighter was treated for possible heat exhaustion.

Sewage Leak & Safety Advisory Due To Flooding

Allegany County is alerting residents to a sewage overflow impacting Braddock Run as a result of the major flooding event on May 13. The flooding has caused significant damage to the County's 15-inch sewer interceptor line, which connects to LaVale's system at Red Hill.  Current Situation: The intense flooding dislodged several manhole covers, allowing gravel and debris to fill the system.  Sections of the sewer line have ruptured, and sewage from the Frostburg area is currently overflowing into Braddock Run in the Red Hill area.  LaVale has closed the Red Hill valve to prevent further downstream contamination from debris. Bench Warrant Arrest

On Sunday, May 18th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Brittany Lynn Rice, 39, of Cumberland, MD. Rice was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on April 23rd, 2025. On that date, it is alleged that Rice failed to appear in District Court for a previous charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Rice was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was released on her own recognizance. ARRESTED -     Brittany Lynn Rice,      W/F 39yo CHARGES – Bench Warrant- Fail to Appear.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS ARREST

On Sunday, May 18th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Brandon Paul Barnard, 39, of Cumberland, MD. The summons was issued in reference to an incident that occurred on May 17th, at a residence in the 400 block of Bedford St. On that date, it is alleged that Barnard began an argument with and assaulted a female victim. Barnard was served the summons and released pending trial in District Court.  ARRESTED -     Brandon Paul Barnard,     W/M 39yo CHARGES -    Assault 2nd Degree.

Comptroller Offering Assistance For Flood Victims

Businesses in the Lonaconing and Westernport areas affected by flooding are being offered help by the Maryland State Comptroller’s office. Waivers on business tax payments and interest will be offered with those reaching out to the Comptroller’s office for assistance. Businesses can visit the Cumberland Branch office in the Allegany Museum, call the taxpayer services division at 800-638-2937 or go through the MyCOMConnect Portal to request assistance.

Congresswoman Opposes SNAP Cuts

Maryland Congresswoman April McClain Delaney has spoke out against changes to the SNAP food program that would shift costs to the states. Delaney said the cost-shift would cause low-income Americans to lose crucial benefits from a program traditionally funded by the federal government…     “The bill imposes an unfunded mandate on states and cuts food assistance for our most vulnerable Americans. Shifts SNAP cuts onto states would directly reduce benefits for 16 million children, eight million seniors, and four million people with disabilities who rely on SNAP each day.”

3 Arrested in George Street Traffic Stop

On Sunday, May 18th, 2025, an officer with the Cumberland Police Department observed a Dodge passenger car fail to stop as required at a posted stop sign. A traffic stop was initiated in the area of George St, and contact was made with the vehicle's occupants. During the course f the stop, a police K9 was utilized to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle's exterior, which indicated positive to the presence of CDS. 3 Schools Remain Closed Monday, May 19th.

Westernport Elementary, George’s Creek Elementary, and Westmar Middle School will be closed May 19, 2025. Working in collaboration with the local water department, they have requested George’s Creek and Westmar schools remain closed another day to build up the water supply. These two schools are planned to re-open on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. George’s Creek and Westmar staff will report to Mountain Ridge High School. Westernport staff will follow direction from their administration.
