Allegany County Schools Early Dismissal Due To Flooding

Under advisement of Emergency Services of Allegany County, we will not be able to transport any students from Westmar Middle, Westernport Elementary, George’s Creek Elementary, and those students from Mountain Ridge that live in those areas. Accommodations are being made for those students who are not able to be safely dismissed. They will be with school personnel until Emergency Services determines they are able to be transported safely. All other Allegany County Public Schools will be dismissing at approximately 2 p.m. Mount Savage students may be delayed due to detours. All afterschool activities are canceled. 

School Board Meeting Canceled This Evening

Due to flooding and increased inclement weather conditions, the Allegany County Board of Education meeting scheduled for this evening has been canceled.  The meeting will be rescheduled at a later date.

Body Attachment Arrest

On Monday, May 12th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Penny Hope-Lynn Marshall, 39, of Cumberland, MD. Marshall was arrested on two active Body Attachments issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on May 5th, 2025. The Body Attachments were issued as a result of an ongoing issue regarding child support non-compliance. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. She is currently being held on a total of $200 bond. Frostburg City Council To Meet

The Frostburg Mayor and City Council have a varied agenda for their work session this week. The council meets Wednesday at 4pm in the Frostburg Municipal Center.  Presentations to the council include a review of the 2025 Maryland General Assembly session from lobbyist Rich Reinhardt of Percy Public Affairs and a review of the impact of the Frostburg First and Main Street programs.  There will also be public hearings on the Fiscal Year 2026 Operating Budget and Municipal Fees.

Burgmeier Cracking Down On Bin Use

The City of Cumberland is letting residents know that Burgmeier Hauling will no longer be collecting garbage placed curbside in the burgundy recycling bins.  Burgmeier originally distributed the bins for recyclables only and will be enforcing their use. Starting Mary 19th, any trash set out in the burgundy bins will be left and tagged. If residents receive a tag, trash must be removed from the burgundy bin and placed in a trash bag or other trash can. Co-mingled recycling is collected on the first trash day and mixed paper recycling is collected on the second trash day each week.

Portion Of Cash Valley Road Closed

The 11900 block of Cash Valley Road is currently closed due to downed trees and power lines. Emergency crews are on the scene. Please find an alternative route.

Disorderly Conduct, Indecent Exposure Arrest

On Monday, May 12th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the Hampton Inn located on Welton Drive for the report of a well-being check of a female subject. Upon arrival, officers located a nude female wandering the halls of the hotel, creating a disturbance. Officers escorted the female back to her room and advised her not to create any further disturbances. Approximately two hours later, officers again responded to the Hampton Inn for a similar type of disturbance.
