Sunset Trains Running Again
Residents throughout the area will now hear the familiar steam engine whistle of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad again. The historic train is back on the tracks after a year’s absence for repairs. New Christian School Planned For Fall Term
A new Christian education facility is planning to be open for the fall of 2025. Messiah Christian Academy has enrollment open for students in Pre-K 3 through 12th grade. The school is hoping to acquire the former Frankfort Intermediate School in Fort Ashby, West Virginia as a location but those plans are not finalized yet. Currently, the academy has met 80% of its staffing needs. Board of Directors members for the academy include Dan Thompson, Larry Remaly, Kristina Dunn, Harry Fike, DJ Ritchey and Matt Dillow. Dan Thompson will be a guest on the Dave Norman show Thursday morning.
National Fire Academy Has Funding Restored
After having to cancel all in-person and virtual training at the National Fire Academy at Emmitsburg in March, it looks like funding for the organization is on the way to being restored. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Thursday that her office is working to restore funding to the Academy. Noem appeared before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, where she was questioned about the funding stripped away by DOGE in March… “I believe we did respond, even it may have just been recently to you. But those grants and programs are being facilitated and those dollars will be forwarded.”
Berlin Woman Killed in Motorcycle Crash
Pennsylvania State Police report that a Berlin woman was killed Sunday afternoon when her motorcycle crossed the center line and crashed into an SUV. The victim was identified as 57 year old Stacey Hartman. The accident took place on Glades Pike.
Queen City Drive CDS Arrest
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department were on patrol in the area of Queen City Drive when they observed a vehicle with a suspended registration. A traffic stop was initiated, and upon making contact with the operators, the Officer requested a K9 to the scene. The K9 scan resulted in a positive alert on the vehicle. The vehicle and occupants were searched, and as a result, a controlled dangerous substance and paraphernalia were located. The operator, Cheryl Livengood, and the passenger, Joshua Reikie, were placed under arrest. Livengood was issued a citation for CDS paraphernalia…
Camden Yards Gets True Blue Certification
Oriole Park at Camden Yards is ow officially True Blue certified. Created to ensure consumer confidence that crabmeat served is Maryland blue crab meat, the True Blue program aims to highlight restaurants and retailers using Maryland crab in their products. Fans going to baseball games can find certified crabmeat dishes at the Baltimore Seafood House food stand located near section 5. There are currently 45 establishments that are True Blue certified in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Florida.
Workgroup Recognized By Council
The Cumberland Mayor and City Council recognized the Baltimore Street Workgroup at their recent meeting. The group recently won two awards for their efforts in the revitalization of downtown. Oak Street Stolen Vehicle
On Monday, May 12, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Oak Street for the report of a stolen vehicle. Upon arrival, Officers located the complainant, who advised that they were inside a residence on Boone Street when the incident occurred. They exited the residence and discovered the vehicle was missing. Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff's Office assisted Officers in locating the vehicle and the operator in the area of Park Street. DDC Continues Work On Restructuring
The city of Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission is working toward becoming a Business Improvement District. This move would eliminate the current DDC structure and provide more opportunities for downtown business owners, which could include district upgrades, security, and marketing. There are approximately 1,000 B-I-Ds, or business improvement districts in the United States.
