Potomac Valley Farms Win WV Conservation Recognition

Cottage Hill Farm, a traditional farm in Grant County, and Powder Keg Farms, a non-traditional farm in Hampshire County received the top West Virginia Conservation Farm of the Year award in their categories.  Both farms are in the Potomac Valley Conservation District and were recognized for their conservation practices to protect soil, land, and water. Each farm received a $1,000 award and the use of a tractor from Middleton Tractor Sales in Fairmont.

Baltimore Street Disorderly Arrest

On Tuesday, October 29th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Baltimore St for the report of a disorderly male subject. Upon arrival, officers were advised that a male subject was observed in the area, yelling and creating a disturbance. Officers located the male subject and advised him to cease his disruptive behaviors and leave the area, to which he complied. New President Takes Over at Potomac State December 1

Dr. Jerry Wallace, currently president of Danville Community College in Virginia, has been named the new president at Potomac State College of West Virginia University.  Wallace has led Danville Community College since 2022.  Previously he has been employed at a community college in Nebraska.

Warrant Arrests – October 28

Travis Allen Riggleman, 32 of Westernport, was served a District Court Bench Warrant for Failure to Appear for a Violation of Probation hearing. His original conviction was for Possession-Not Cannabis where he entered a guilty plea and received a Probation Before Judgment disposition with 12-months Supervised Probation while his other charge of Concealing a Dangerous Weapon was placed on the Stet Docket. Riggleman is being held without bond pending a bail review in District Court. Veteran-Owned Business Getting State Help

Governor Wes Moore has made $2.2 million dollars available for supporting small, minority, and veteran-owned businesses to make Maryland more competitive. Funding includes loans and equity investments from the Military Personnel and Veteran-Owned Small Business Loan Program and the Maryland Small Business Development Authority. The money will help businesses create and retain jobs across the state, including 206 Alder, a new veteran-owned restaurant in the Oakland historic district in Garrett County.

Allegany College Adding Solar

The campus of Allegany College of Maryland may start to take on a different look as construction of a microgrid for the campus begins to take shape.  The microgrid will help to facilitate a new, clean-energy ecosystem that will also lead to a suite of certifications, courses, and degree programs at the college.  Solar panels across the campus will be part of the microgrid, according to ACM Spokesperson Kristin Kehrwald… “We will have ground-mounted, most likely, solar panels.
