Extension of Reynolds Street & Dirks Street Closure
The City of Cumberland Street Maintenance Division would like to notify the public that Reynolds Street & Dirks Street will be closed to through traffic on Thursday, October 17, 2024 and Friday, October 18, 2024 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This closure begins at Pine Avenue and will extend to Fort Avenue. Halloween Parade Two Weeks Away
The South Cumberland Halloween Parade is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30 on Virginia Avenue. The parade is sponsored by the South Cumberland Business and Civic Association and is named for Marsha L. Thomas. WCBC will provide live coverage of the annual event with Rock Cioni and Jim Zamagias.
Greenbrier Meets Financial Obligations
The Greenbrier Hotel Corp., led by Gov. Jim Justice and his family, announced it has satisfied its financial obligation to a credit collection company, averting the foreclosure sale of the historic West Virginia resort. WVMetroNews reports that following the payment in full, the auction sale of The Greenbrier Resort that had been scheduled for next week, Oct. 25, has been cancelled and fully withdrawn.
City Plans Annual Leaf Collection
The City of Cumberland will begin its annual leaf collection on Monday, November 4th. The Street Maintenance Division of Public Works will be handling the collection as in years past. Residents in the area scheduled for pickup during a particular week should rake their leaves prior to the collection dates below. Leaves should be raked into piles to the edge of the sidewalk adjacent to the street, but not into the street, to avoid clogging the storm sewer collection basins. Inmate Suffers Severe Burns in Cell at WCI
A Tuesday evening fire inside a cell at WCI in Cresaptown burned an inmate and sent several corrections officers to the hospital, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office. The incident occurred at 6:30 p.m. The inmate was flown to Johns Hopkins Burn Center in Baltimore by Maryland State Police Trooper 5 helicopter. The exact cause of the fire is being investigated but it does not appear to have been intentionally set.
ARREST WARRANT SERVED
On October 16th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Phillip William Lindner. The warrant was issued as a result of an investigation into thefts that occurred on Country Club Road. An officer from the Cumberland Police Department completed an investigation and filed for charges at District Court. Upon arrest Lindner was transported to Central Booking where he was later seen by a District Court commissioner and remanded to the Allegany Detention Center without bond. Virginia Avenue theft arrest
On October 15th, 2024 at approximately 11:50 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business on Virginia Avenue for a theft. Upon arrival an officer was advised that Lyndia Santiago had removed items from the store without paying. An employee from the store gave a description of Santiago as well as vehicle information. Santiago was located, a short time later, and issued a citation for the theft. She was then released pending trial at District Court. FEMA Funding for COVID Funerals
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has designated funds to help with funeral expenses for persons who died due to COVID. Wendy Upchurch of the Upchurch Funeral Homes says that claims can still be made with appropriate documentation. Upchurch said her funeral home is willing to help anyone needing more information. Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclaimed in the City of Cumberland
The Cumberland Mayor and City Council proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Cumberland at last night's public meeting. Mayor Ray Morris read the proclamation intended to bring awareness to the women, children, and men affected, as well as expose the abusers… “Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy, services and assistance to victims. Rock the Block Benefits Cumberland Clock Project
Funds continue to come in for the Cumberland Clock. Ed Mullaney of Let’s Beautify Cumberland told WCBC News that parking for Saturday’s Rock the Block celebration downtown helped the cause. Mullaney added that close to another $2,000 will go toward funding the clock, scheduled for a January 1 dedication.
