In Buffalo's 23-20 win over the New York Jets, Cumberland's Ty Johnson played a key role.  Johnson carried the ball 4 times for 34 yards, average 8.5 per carry.  Johnson continues to play a key role in the Buffalo offense.

Reynolds Street & Dirks Street Closed Until October 16

The City of Cumberland Street Maintenance Division would like to notify the public that Reynolds Street & Dirks Street will be closed to through traffic on Monday,  October 14, 2024 – Wednesday, October 16, 2024 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  This closure begins at Pine Avenue and will extend to Fort Avenue. Missing 16-year-old Hyndman Girl

Update at 11:07: The 16-year-old girl has been located by emergency crews and is being treated for weather exposure.  Efforts continue to locate a missing 16-year-old female in Hyndman, Pennsylvania.  Elizabeth Brooks is 5 feet 3 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes.  She was last seeing wearing turquoise pajama pants and a green shirt. Elizabeth is autistic. She was last seen in the area of Bedford Street and Water Street in Hyndman. E. Harrison Street Trespassing arrest

On October 14th, 2024 at approximately 9:20 a.m. an officer from the Cumberland Police Department was patrolling the area of E. Harrison Street. During this time, the officer observed Asaad Mikhail Raymond to be walking upon CSX property that is clearly marked “NO TRESPASSING,” The officer contacted Raymond and informed him of the violation. Fraley Addresses Bullying and Cell Phones

Tammy Fraley is running for a third term on the Allegany County Board of Education and last week she addressed the issue of bullying.  Fraley said that cell phones and social media have worsened the problem.  She added that state laws prevent immediate notification of the public regarding sanctions for offenders. Schools across the country have differing philosophies regarding cell phone usage by students.  Currently Allegany County schools leave discretion to teachers and Tammy Fraley says she encountered a new method of dealing with the issue at a conference, and it involves a magnetic case.  

Hogan Pledges Bipartisanship in Senate

Republican Senatorial candidate Larry Hogan stopped by WCBC over the weekend for an extended interview.  The former governor knows he is trailing his Democratic opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, but he believes voters will look at their contrasting philosophies.  Hogan says that if he’s elected to the Senate, he will work with members of both parties, as he had to do as governor.

Southern Garrett Return to Football Major Success Story

One of the success stories in the past year locally involves the football program at Southern Garrett High School.  Last year the school had to cancel the season after just two games and forfeited the rest of the season due to injuries and players quitting.  Southern athletic director Matt Redinger told WCBC that hiring Dave McLaughlin as the new head coach made a world of difference  Redinger added that the principal of Southern, Ryan Wolf, was also instrumental in reviving the football program.

Wes Moore Recognized by Time Magazine

Many political observers believe Maryland Governor Wes Moore has a bright future and apparently Time Magazine agrees.  Time named Moore one of its top 100 to watch for the next generation.  In accepting the award in New York, Moore discussed the inspiration of his grandfather.

ACM Presidential Search Narrowed to Four Candidates

The Allegany College of Maryland Board of Trustees has narrowed its presidential search to four candidates and the public is being invited to be part of the process.  Open forums are being held with each candidate at the Robert Zimmer Theater and questions from the citizenry are welcome.  The final four candidates include Dr. Kurt Hoffman, currently vice president of instructional and student affairs at ACM.  Also vying for the president’s job is David Jones, currently vice president of advancement and community relations at the college.  Former AC professor Tom Striplin is a candidate; Striplin is currently President of Eastern…
