Chamber/UPMC Team Up To Held Food Bank
Those attending the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce After-Hours Event at UMPC this month will have the opportunity to help out the Western Maryland Food Bank. Attendees may bring monetary donations of cash or checks made out to the food bank and those donations will be matched that evening by UPMC Western Maryland through their partnership with Maryland Physicians Care. The After-Hours is scheduled for November 19th.
Overnight Gas Line Rupture
National Highway in LaVale was closed from Winchester Road to Dunhams just after 1 a.m. Thursday for a gas line rupture. Allegany County Emergency Service remain on scene till the repair was made and National Highway way reopened just before 3 a.m.
Redistricting Commission Holds First Meeting
The Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission met virtually on Tuesday for its first session. The five-person commission includes Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss. Tuesday’s meeting lasted just over a half hour and included information on census data.
Public School Enrollment Drops in West Virginia
The state of West Virginia has announced a 2.5% drop in public school enrollment in the past year. Declining enrollment has caused school closures in Roane, Randolph, and Barbour Counties this past year.

Fayette County Crash Kills Three
An evening crash on Route 40 near the Youghiogheny Lake killed three people Monday evening. A tractor-trailer, van, and pickup were involved in the crash that occurred around 6pm. Pennsylvania State Police say the tractor-trailer was eastbound on National Pike when it crossed the centerline, hitting the pickup truck, which then hit the van. The driver of the tractor-trailer, the pickup truck driver, and a passenger in the van were all killed. Five other van passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Casinos Generate Over $160 Million in October
Maryland’s six casinos combined for over $162 million dollars in revenue during the month of October. The total was a 1% increase over the same month from last year. Action at slot Machines and table games in the casinos contributed $69.5 million dollars in tax revenue to the state, including $50 million to the Education Trust Fund. MGM National Harbor brought in the most revenue with $67.8 million for October; Rocky Gap Casino generated $4.4 million.
Discrimination Policy Covers All
Recent requests brought before the Cumberland Mayor and City Council include making a change to the city’s anti-discrimination policy to specifically include members of the LGBTQA+ community. Mayor Ray Morriss said the council will take up the matter for discussion, but feels the present policy covers everyone and revisions for specific groups could be never-ending… “Once you start singling out particular groups to say, ‘well, we’re here to protect you.’ Well, what does that then say to other groups that are also like, ‘wait a minute – if you’re citing them, maybe we need to also be cited, too.’”
Maryland Democrats Disappointed In Vote To Open Government
Members of the Maryland federal delegation voiced their opposition to the vote that moved the reopening of the government forward to the House of Representatives. The government shutdown that started October 1 approached an end with the Senate passage of a funding bill Tuesday night. Senator Chris Van Hollen voted “no” on the bill, saying it does nothing for Americans’ healthcare… “This deal does not come close to meeting the requirements, including preventing this explosion of healthcare costs that’s upon us.”
Bench Warrant Arrest
On Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Dion Anthony Alves on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on November 10th, 2025. On that date, it is alleged that Alves failed to appear in District Court for a previous charge of knowingly driving an uninsured vehicle. He was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for an initial appearance, where he was later released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
