WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON TODAY

West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph in Maryland, Central and Eastern Allegany and Extreme Western Allegany Counties. In Virginia, Central Virginia Blue Ridge and Northern Virginia Blue Ridge, and Eastern Highland and Western Highland Counties. In West Virginia, Eastern Grant, Eastern Mineral, Eastern Pendleton, and Western Mineral Counties. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Secure outdoor objects.

Book Center to Close This Month

A Cumberland business that has been downtown since the 1950s will be closing its doors soon.  The Book Center on North Centre Street actually began in the 1950s on South Centre Street.  A caller to Friday’s Dave Norman program described two moves since then.  The first was to the Gee Bee/Rose's shopping center in 1975 and the second was to the current location on North Centre Street in 1989.  Gayle Griffith, owner of the Book Center, said her spacious store is quite the challenge to clear out.

Mike McKay Speech on Lincoln Draws Ovation in State Senate

Today is Presidents Day and appropriately, State Senator Mike McKay gave a speech in Annapolis last Wednesday on the actual birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.  McKay spoke of Lincoln’s character in his relationship with former slave and leading abolitionist, Frederick Douglass.  McKay drew chuckles when he noted that Lincoln was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame.  McKay’s ten-minute speech drew an ovation in the Senate when he concluded.

Bishop Walsh Accepting Applications for Next School Year

Bishop Walsh School is accepting applications now for interested students from pre-K all the way through high school.  BW principal Jen Flinn told WCBC that any family that would like a Catholic school education should call the school to find out more.  The number is 301-724-5360.

Fatal Crash on I-70 Saturday

Maryland State Police report a fatal crash on Interstate 70 in Washington County Saturday afternoon.   A Honda CRV was the only vehicle involved in the collision.  EMS personnel were on scene and treating two patients from the collision.  The driver, Erick Pierce was transported by ground ambulance to Meritus Medical Center.   The passenger, Todd Keefauver was pronounced deceased at the scene.  TFC Nolf responded to the scene to conduct the reconstruction investigation.  Investigation revealed the Honda CRV was traveling E/B on I-70 in the area of the 21-mile marker when it left the roadway for an unknown reason traveling off…

BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Saturday, February 15, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Courtney Winner.  The warrants were issued as the result of Winner failing to appear in court on original charges of DWI/Drugs and Driving Uninsured.  Winner was located inside of a residence in the 600 block of E. First Street and arrested.  She was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, and oxycodone.  Officers determined that Winner intended to distribute the suspected crack cocaine that was located.  She was transported to Central Booking and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a…
