Men’s Swimming Takes Third Consecutive MEC Championship

Frostburg State Men's Swim team secured their third consecutive Mountain East Conference title on Saturday, placing third overall at the GMAC/MEC Championships.   On the final day of events, senior Nate Canapp took second overall in the 1,650 free at 16:09.74 while earning First Team All-MEC, as sophomore Jack Bond placed seventh with Honorable Mention honors in 17:07.72. In the 100 free, sophomores Abe Bias (46.43) and Dylan King (46.92) secured First and Second Team All-MEC honors, respectively, finishing fifth and seventh overall, with the former setting the third-fastest time in program history and the latter earning the fifth-fastest.  …

Governor Morrisey Declares State of Emergency in 10 Counties

Governor Patrick Morrisey has declared a State of Emergency amid heavy rains and flooding in Cabell, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Logan, Mercer, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh, Summers, and Wyoming Counties. Governor Morrisey is urging all West Virginians to be vigilant and use caution as other parts of the state are affected by adverse weather.  Governor Morrisey ordered personnel and resources to mobilize and respond to any emergency and delegated certain administrative powers to the Director of the West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD) to facilitate the provision of essential emergency services. Charges for Deadly crash in Summerhill

A Cambria County, PA man is facing serious charges following a deadly vehicle crash that occurred last year in Summerhill Township. Police reported that on January 8, 2024, Michael Zimmerman Jr., now 31, was speeding on Route 53 in winter conditions when his triaxle crossed the centerline and collided with an oncoming car. The driver of the opposing vehicle, 73-year-old Margaret Roles of Lily, was pronounced dead at the scene. Zimmerman is charged with multiple offenses, including felonies for homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter.

Berkeley County man killed

A man was shot and killed by officers responding to a call to assist EMS in Berkeley County late Thursday night.  Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Eric Burnett said officers were asked to assist EMS who were responding to a breathing complaint involving a 65-year-old woman at a home on Grapevine Road at around 11:30 p.m.  EMS reported a man with a machete and a rifle brandished those weapons at the door of the residence when the first responders tried to get in the house.  Dispatch relayed to the officers that the woman did not have a breathing problem…

MD Motor Vehicle Administration Closed Monday

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will close all branch offices and Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) stations Monday, February 15, in observance of Presidents’ Day. The MVA branch offices will reopen for normal operations on Tuesday, February 18. To schedule an appointment at an MVA branch, customers can visit the Appointment Scheduler online. Customers are encouraged to sign up for a myMVA account to take advantage of the many services available online. With a myMVA account, customers can also access their driver’s license information, view and print their vehicle registration, view MVA correspondence and check their vehicle emissions inspection…

Fire on Bedford Street

A fire at 122 Bedford Street downtown was called in at 10:40 this morning.  Flames were shooting out of the second floor windows.  The fire was reported out at 10:53 a.m.  Assisting Cumberland firefighters were crews from Lavale, Ridgeley, Bedford Road, Cresaptown, Bowling Green, Wiley Ford, and Shaft assisted.  No injuries were reported.  

Sudden Snowfall Causing Accidents Saturday

Allegany County authorities are reporting multiple motor vehicle accidents this morning.  No injuries have been reported.  The snow emergency plan is now in effect.

HIGH WIND WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH MONDAY

National Weather Service has issued a HIGH WIND WATCH for portions of western Maryland, western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 55 to 65 mph possible.Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location prior to the onset of winds.
