Verizon is continuing to experience a service outage impacting phone lines at UPMC Western Maryland’s Cumberland locations. This includes phones and fax machines and impacts phone numbers starting with 240-964-XXXX. Areas impacted include: Inpatient floors and individual rooms All UPMC Western Maryland medical offices, urgent care locations, and outpatient centers in Cumberland At this time, both incoming and outgoing calls are impacted. Pirate rookie sensation Paul Skenes will be the starting pitcher for the National League Tuesday night in the annual All Star game. Skenes has a 6-0 record and on Thursday threw 7 no-hit innings in Milwaukee. The last Pirate to start on the mound in the Midsummer Classic was Jerry Reuss in 1975.

West Virginia is taking its Save Women’s Sports Act to the Supreme Court.  A circuit court blocked the act from becoming law, saying it violated the rights of transgender students.  State Attorney General Patrick Morrissey has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear the case. If the court takes it up, Morrissey says it will have far reaching effects on women’s sports for years to come…

Maryland’s sports wagering market had its fifth best single-month total in June, more than doubling its contribution to the state in tax revenue from last year.  Bettors wagered a combined $385 million dollars through retail outlets and mobile apps. Tax revenues from sports books go to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund and June saw a deposit in that fund of over $5 million dollars. Winning prizes paid out in June totaled $345 million.

Allegany college of Maryland is offering tours of their Willowbrook Woods student housing as part of their open house on Monday, July 15. Lauren Winterburg, Coordinator of Student Recruitment, says students can register for one of four times available during the day to see the housing in addition to the rest of the campus… Winterburg says families can be assured ACM’s housing has 24/7 security throughout the year and student and visitor IDs are required…

On July 10th, US Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen introduced the Baltimore BRIDGE Relief Act to the leadership of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. The Act is for the rebuilding of Frances Scott Key Bridge, and Cardin wants to assure the federal government pays 100%… Senator Van Hollen followed Cardin, saying the 47-year old bridge served as a vital transportation artery and the gateway to the port Baltimore…

Maryland’s Main Street Program recently handed out certificates for accreditation at the summer conference of the Maryland Municipal League.  Melinda Kelleher of Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission said the process to become accredited was more robust this year, but the city was accredited.  Kelleher said Housing and Community Development head Jake Day paused before presenting Cumberland’s certificate, saying he was excited to see what was happening locally…

Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s administration proposed nearly $149 million in midyear spending reductions on Wednesday to steer more money to help fund child care and Medicaid as state officials continue to wrestle with budget challenges. On Thursday, July 11, 2024 at approximately 7:32 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of Fayette Street for an assault.  Police contacted Tiffany Chandler and Justin Yanky.  Chandler reported that she had been strangled by Yanky.  Yanky told officers that he had been assaulted by Chandler.  Both subjects had sustained injuries that they claimed were the result of the altercation.  After further investigation, Chandler and Yanky were arrested and transported to Central Booking.  Chandler was found to be in possession of suspected fentanyl, suspected cocaine, and drug paraphernalia.  Chandler and Yanky…
