Frankfort Baseball Advances to State Title Game

The Frankfort Falcons defeated Fairmont Senior Friday, 13-5, to advance to the state title game in West Virginia.  The Falcons will play Ripley at 5:30 Saturday for the state title in Charleston.  Frankfort won the AA title last year and is competing in AAA this year.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia Back in the United States

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been returned to the United States from El Salvador.  Garcia, who had been living in Maryland and whose deportation became a cause celebre for U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen, faces criminal charges in Tennessee for alien smuggling.

Mt. Savage Community Leader Dies Friday

A community leader in Mt. Savage and Allegany County has passed away.  Danny Williams died Friday at the age of 76.  Williams served 55 years at the Mt. Savage Volunteer Fire Department in many office positions, and as a firefighter and EMT.  He also served as president of the Mt. Bench Warrant Served

On June 5th, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Michael Allen Wallace. The warrant was issued as a result of Wallace violating terms of his probation for an original charge of Rogue and Vagabond. Wallace was taken into custody and transported to Central Booking where he was later seen by a District Court commissioner and held on a temporary commitment. Oil Spill At Baltimore Harbor

Crews are working on the cleanup of a 2,000-gallon oil spill in to Baltimore Harbor.  Contractors were filling fuel tanks for backup power generators for Johns Hopkins Hospital Wednesday night when the tanks overfilled, resulting in oil entering the harbor near Fells Point.  Governor Moore relayed that quick action by the Coast Guard is keeping the area of the spill to a minimum…     “The Coast Guard and the contractor are using oil-absorbing materials and skimmers that feed into a 4,000 gallon pump truck. More States Consider “Clean Slate” Laws

Like Maryland, more states are considering “clean slate” laws, establishing a process that automatically seals records of most misdemeanor charges. Logan Seacrest with the R-Street Institute says currently, states rely on a complex petition-based system to clear old criminal records. He says when people can’t clear their record, they’re less likely to get a job or find safe housing…     “It’s been hard for companies to hire good people. And actually, people who get employment after a conviction are no less likely to quit early. In fact, their turnover rates are actually lower.”

Ankle Replacements At Potomac Valley Hospital

Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser has added a new procedure for its patients. Total ankle replacements are now available. A total ankle replacement is a surgical procedure where a damaged or arthritic ankle joint is replaced by an artificial joint. The procedure aims to relieve pain, improve function, and restore mobility. Dr. Sherif Dabash, who joined Potomac Valley Hospital in 2023, performs the surgery.

Sommerville Avenue Assault Arrest

On June 5th, 2025 at approximately 1:42 p.m., officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence on Sommerville Avenue, for an assault. Upon arrival officers made contact with the victim. The victim advised that during an altercation inside the home, they were bit and scratched by Arthur Lee Brown Jr. An officer was then able to observe injuries consistent with the victim's statement. The officer continued their investigation and reviewed video surveillance, Brown subsequently placed under arrest. He was transported to Central Booking and later seen by a District Court commissioner where he was remanded to Allegany County…

Portion Of Harrison Street Closed June 9-11

Beginning Monday, June 9, 2025, through Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Harrison Street will be closed from S. Centre Street to Queen City Drive due to the installation of a new water main.

Zoning Board Will Reconvene

The seventh appeal hearing on the placement of nine wind turbines on Dans Mountain proved inconclusive on Wednesday.  The Allegany County Board of Zoning Appeals is deliberating an appeal from citizens group ANCHOR who wants a reversal of the county’s decision to grant zoning permits and certification to Dans Mountain Wind Force. The board is requesting additional information on groundwater and have scheduled a follow-up hearing for June 25th at 4pm.
