The Maryland Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved grant funding for repairs and maintenance of the North Branch Potomac River Railroad Bridge. The bridge is used by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad to get from their rail yard in Ridgeley to the Western Maryland Station at Canal Place in Cumberland. Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman has announced the state’s annual sales tax holiday on select items will begin Sunday, August 10, 2025.  Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week will run through Saturday, August 16.  During Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week, shoppers do not pay the state’s 6% sales tax for clothing and shoes priced under $100 and the first $40 for backpacks purchased during this period. The sales tax will be waived regardless of the number of items purchased.  The annual sales tax holiday was established by state law in 2007 and coincides with the weeks leading up to the start of a new school year in Maryland. 

On August 5th, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Nancy Louise Frazier. The summons was issued after a Cumberland Police officer completed an investigation of a theft that occurred on July 17th, 2025. The officer responded to a business on Park Street and made contact with an employee working loss prevention for the store. The employee advised that Frazier had taken merchandise from the store without paying. The employee also advised that other thefts were made by Frazier and had been cataloged over a period of time. On August 5th, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Pasquale Joseph Vittoriano. The warrant was issued as a result of Vittoriano violating the terms of a protective order. Vittoriano was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later presented before a District Court commissioner and released pending trial at District Court. An audit of Maryland’s Department of General Services has found over $400 million dollars in leases that run counter to the state’s attempt to save money by relocating a number of state agencies to Baltimore. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated Allegany County as a natural disaster area because of flooding and excessive rain that happened May 14-15. This enables the USDA Farm Service Agency to provide loans that can be used to meet various recovery needs, including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation, or to refinance certain debts.
