Heritage Days Deemed Success
The 55th Annual Heritage Days Festival proved to be very successful this past weekend. Perfect weather on Saturday and Sunday saw increased crowds for the festival along Historic Washington Street. Ed Mullaney of Let’s Beautify Cumberland and the celebrity champion of Cumberland Jeopardy this year, said the festival shows off the history and culture of the city… “It lights some fires. It builds pride in the local community and it shows the outside community what we’re all about – history – but we’re having fun and looking forward to the future.”
E. Roberts Street Assault Arrest
On Sunday, September 15, 2024 at approximately 4:55 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 100 block E. Roberts Street. Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that she had been assaulted by Dexter Smith. Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries consistent with her statement. Smith was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and released on his personal recognizance. Bedford Street Assault Arrests
On Sunday, September 15, 2024 at approximately 4:17 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Bedford Street in reference to an assault in progress. Police contacted the involved parties and identified them as Nikita Waller, Kaitlin Bruckner, and Chaunce Teele. Officers learned that an assault did occur between parties and that they were disturbing the peace of the neighbors. Animal Shelter Above Capacity
The Allegany County Animal Shelter is one of many shelters nationwide experiencing capacity concerns. Though still taking animals, right now the shelter is doing so on a case-by-case basis. Van Hollen Introduces “Polluters Pay” Legislation
U.S. Senator from Maryland, Chris Van Hollen is introducing legislation that will collect funds from polluters he says are fueling the climate crisis. FSU Recognized For Voter Efforts
The ALL-IN Campus Democracy Challenge, sponsored by Civic Nation, has recognized Frostburg State University for its nonpartisan efforts fostering high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022-midterm elections. The challenge seeks to make voting a social norm and engage students between elections. FSU was awarded a Silver Campus Seal making it a college that achieved a voting rate between 30- and 39%, highlighting students are engaged on an ongoing basis.
Motorists Urged To Share The Road During Harvest Time
As the fall harvest season begins, the Maryland Departments of Transportation and Agriculture remind motorists that they will be sharing the road with farm equipment. More than 12,000 working farms across the state use large, slow moving equipment.
