West Virginia Transportation Award Finalist

The West Virginia Department of Transportation is one of 12 finalists in the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials annual awards.  The state’s work on the Wellsburg Bridge will compete alongside other finalists for the Grand Prize and the Peoples Choice awards. Both awards offer a $10,000 donation for a charity ro transportation-related scholarship. Winners will be announces at the Association’s annual meeting in October.

Maryland Is Happy

Maryland was ranked the second happiest state in America, according to a 2024 Wallet-Hub survey. The survey shows Maryland was only ranked behind Hawaii as the happiest state. Emotional and physical wellbeing, along with worked and community environment were factored in determining the state’s ranking. Low unemployment and high household income helped Maryland reach the second spot. Marylanders are also known to post fewer remarks online about work-related stress.

Burglary Investigation Leads to Arrest

On Saturday, September 14, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Shawn Gladden.  The warrant was issued as the result of a burglary incident that was investigated on September 12, 2024.  On this date at approximately 10:50 PM, officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Baltimore Street for the report of a female yelling for help.  When police arrived, they contacted Shawn Gladden and another female inside the residence.  It was later determined that neither subject had permission to be at the residence.  Police filed for charges against Gladden at the District Court of…

West Virginia Tourism Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels

The state of West Virginia announced last week that tourism in the state has returned to pre-pandemic levels.  In 2023 the state saw an estimated 75 million visitors, a state record, with an estimated economic impact of nearly $9 billion.  The state estimates that visitors to the state spent over $6 billion while visiting.

Arrest Warrant Served on Weapons Charges

On Saturday, September 14, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Joshua Hill.  The warrant was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on September 10, 2024.  On this date at approximately 5:34 PM, officers responded to the 100 block of Humbird Street for a check on well-being.  Officers arrived and received information that Joshua Hill had left a residence with a firearm.  While investigating the complaint, police received another call for the report of shots fired in the area of E. Historic Cemetery Tours Today

Since 1983, the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization has provided free walking tours of historic Rose Hill and Saints Peter and Paul cemeteries during Heritage Days weekend. The tours are at Noon and 3pm. Ed Taylor, Jr., CHCO President, told WCBC that the tour will feature Revolutionary War Heroes with a unique story. We have Thomas Beall. We erected his monument ten years ago. He’s a Revolutionary War soldier and founder of Cumberland. A Revolutionary War soldier Lt. Colonel Moses Rawlings. Rawlings Maryland is named after him. Jason Jarons Band performs Sunday at Heritage Days

Many folks in the region know Jason from his current band, The Cooley Gang, or his perennial bluegrass outfit, the Halftime String Band, or even his early days with oldtime juggernaut, The Morgantown Rounders. Park Street Assault Arrest

On Friday, September 13th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department handled a complaint at headquarters where a victim advised they were assaulted. Through the investigation, it was learned the original incident occurred earlier in the morning at a residence in the 300 Block of Bond Street. Justin Demoss was identified as the suspect in the assault. Officers received information that Demoss was in the 700 Block of Park Street. Criminal Summons Served

On Friday, September 13th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Valerie Hamilton. The Allegany County District Court issued the summons as a result of a citizen complaint. Hamilton was released pending her trial at the District Court. Arrest: Valerie Hamilton, age 47, Cumberland, Maryland. Charges: Assault 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct.
