Boardwalk Tram Not Running After Child Death
The town of Ocean City has suspended tram service on their famous boardwalk following the death of a 2-year old on Tuesday. The boy was crossing the tram pad near Dorchester Street Tuesday evening when he was struck by one of the trams. The Ocean City Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the incident. Officials say tram service will be suspended indefinitely and may not be running for upcoming events including the OC Air Show Saturday and Sunday.
Poll Finds Parrott, Delaney Too Close To Call
Public Opinion Strategies recently conducted 400 interviews among likely voters in the Maryland Congressional 6th District where Republican Neil Parrott is facing off against Democrat April McClain-Delaney for the seat being vacated by David Trone. Of those polled, nearly two-thirds say the country is on the wrong track. President Biden received a 65% disapproval score. For the congressional race, pollsters say the race is tight with Delaney having 42% of the vote to Parrott’s 40%. Other candidates received 4% and 13 % are undecided about the November election.
Portion of Liberty Street Closed Friday
On Friday, August 23, 2024, from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, Liberty Street will be closed from Union Street to Harrison Street for water line replacement. Water service should not be interrupted.
Mechanic Street Closed today
Mechanic Street between Pershing Street and Harrison Street will be closed between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Thursday, 8/22/24. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Trucks will be detoured to Queen City Drive to avoid the closure. Traffic is expected to be fully restored after work is completed at 1:00 PM.

Memorial Hospital Site Open To New Developer
After extended negotiations, it would seem that the project developer originally chosen to develop housing at the former Memorial Hospital site in Cumberland is out. Mayor Ray Morriss told WCBC News on Wednesday that the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation would be looking for new proposals for the site and would not be doing further work with RAZ Development… "That’s something you will be hearing something about very shortly. Moving forward on establishing a developer to develop that property. We’ll probably be opening that back up to see if we can find a developer to do the property."
Juvenile Crime Falling, But Still Concerning
A new report shows the rate of juvenile crime has been falling recently, but disparities remain in Maryland and nationwide. The Sentencing Project released a report that shows the number of youth in juvenile justice facilities has fallen from more than 100,000 in 2000 to 27,000 in 2022. Criminal Summons/Bench Warrant Served
On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Aaron Racic. The Allegany County District Court issued the summons for an incident that occurred on June 18, 2024. During the investigation, Officers learned that Racic threw a knife threw the window of a building in the 100 Block of North Centre Street causing it to shatter. Deadline Extended For DNR Calendar Photos
An extended deadline has been announced by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for submissions to its 2024 photo competition. Photographers have until 5pm on August 26th to enter their photography into competition for cash prizes, State Park passes, and publication in DNR’s 2025 nature calendar. The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program, along with the US Department of Transportation want drivers and motorcyclists to drive sober as summer winds down. In 2023, nearly 62% of traffic fatalities in West Virginia involved positive indicators of illegal and prescription drug use.
