Allegany County Emergency Services out for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment Route 36 near the landfill. The vehicle is off the roadway down the embankment trapped between two trees. The driver of the vehicle is uninjured however cannot exit her vehicle.
Two Alarm Baltimore Ave house fire
Cumberland Fire Department out on a two alarm fire on Baltimore Ave. Traffic is delayed in the area of Baltimore Ave from Decatur St to Marion St, at this time due to a house fire. Please find an alternate route for the morning commute. Allegany County emergency units are staged at Baltimore avenue in Smallwood. Fire crews clearing a second fire earlier this morning in Flintstone. Firefighters extinguished a garage fire at Town Creek road. Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
Fugitive from Justice Arrest
On Wednesday, December 4th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Steven Michael Hall, 34, of Fort Ashby WV. Hall was arrested on an active Fugitive Warrant when it was discovered he had an active warrant for his arrest in Mineral County WV. The WV warrant was issued for charges of DUI while driving suspended/revoked. Hall was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. Garrett Government Buildings Closed today
All Garrett County Government buildings and the Garrett County Courthouse are closed due to inclement weather on Thursday, December 5, 2024. All non-essential Garrett County employees will work remotely. For Thursday, December 5, the state has declared liberal leave beginning at 6 am through the end of day shift in Garrett County. Emergency essential employees should report as scheduled. Non-emergency essential employees who report to the office to work may use liberal leave upon notification to the employee's supervisor. Teleworkers should work as scheduled unless leave is granted.
First Round of Relocation Packages Awarded
The first five recipients of the Cumberland Relocation package were announced on Tuesday as part of the consent agenda of the Cumberland Mayor and City Council. Five families from across the country will receive grant funding not to exceed $20,000 from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to relocate and renovate an existing home or make a down payment on a newly constructed home in the city limits. State Board Of Education Releases Report Card
The Maryland State Department of Education has released its report card for the 2023-2024 academic year. Allegany County elementary schools showed improvement in academic achievement and school quality and student success. English Language Proficiency did not improve at the elementary level. Middle school students in the county did not improve in any of the rated categories. High school students showed improvement in academic achievement but did not improve in post-secondary readiness, graduation rates, or school quality and student success.
New Employment Agreement For City Administrator
On Tuesday, the Cumberland City Council approved the execution of a new employment agreement with current City Administrator Jeff Silka for the next five years.
