Edwards Fund Awards Dollars to Rosenbaum Project
The Senator George C. Edwards Fund has awarded the Rosenbaum Building Project $500,000 to complete the final phase of its renovations. Once completely restored, the 52,000 square foot building on Baltimore Street in Cumberland will be home to retail space, office space, apartments, and short-term rentals. Nine new luxury apartments will be available by December. Fund Director Jake Shade said it takes a focused team effort to restore these long-neglected buildings and they are pleased to collaborate with developer CG Enterprises in their work.
Veterans Administration Awards Grants for Veteran Housing
The US Department of Veterans Affairs is granting over $800 million dollars to help homeless and at-risk Veterans with housing issues. Through the Supportive Services program, 239 grants will aid organizations that rapidly rehouse Veterans and their families facing a housing crisis. Other programs will provide case management and transitional housing. Veterans Administration Health Secretary Shereef Elnahal says the programs work toward finding homes for more than 40,000 homeless vets each year… ”Number one, we get Veterans in housing as quickly as possible. Criminal Summons Served
On Tuesday, August 20th, 2024, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Leroy Gold Baldwin, 66, of Hyndman PA. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on July 16th, 2024. During that incident, it is alleged that Baldwin was operating a motor vehicle without valid insurance, registration, or a valid license. He was served the summons and released, pending trial in District Court. Arrested: Leroy Gold Baldwin Age: 66 Charges: Suspended Registration, Driving w/o License, Uninsured M/V.
Bench Warrant Served
On Tuesday, August 20th, 2024, The Cumberland City Police arrested Brittany Mia Fulk, 34, of Richmond VA. Fulk was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Anne Arundel County District Court for failing to appear for a trial in 2021. The original charge that she failed to attend trial for was driving on a suspended license. Fulk was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where she was released on her own recognizance. Dan’s Mountain Pool Short on Lifeguards For End of Season
The swimming pool at Dan’s Mountain State Park will be closed August 26th through the 30th due to a lifeguard shortage as staff return to school. All pool parties scheduled during the closure will still be honored. The pool will reopen daily from 11am to 6pm from August 31 through the final day of the season, Labor Day, on September 2nd.
Still Time To Join Citizens Academy
The deadline has been extended to apply for the Citizens Local Government Academy offered by the City of Cumberland. Seven two-hour classes begin September 19 and will meet every Thursday night through October. The initial class will be limited to 20 city or Allegany County residents over the age of 18. The academy takes a behind-the-scenes look at how City of Cumberland government works. The deadline to register is now Friday, August 23 at 4 p.m.
Allegany County Public and Private Schools Open Next Week
Schools in Allegany County get underway with students next week with the vast majority opening on Monday with early dismissals. Public school students, along with Bishop Walsh and Calvary Christian Academy, all begin classes Monday, August 26. Lighthouse Christian Academy will start on Wednesday, August 28.
Law Enforcement Conducts Warrant Sweep – 9 Arrested
The Allegany County Combined Warrant Unit, Maryland State Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, and Maryland Department of Correction’s Warrant Apprehension Unit conducted a warrant sweep on Monday, August 19, 2024. As a result, the following individuals were apprehended: Sherman E. Denmark, 43 of Lonaconing, was served two (2) District Court Warrants. 1. Bench Warrant for Failure to Comply with Peace Order 2.
