Missing Female Located

On Saturday, July 26th in area of South Cumberland Law Enforcement conducted a missing person search for Jessica Roman, 36 year old. She was reported missing and was last seen on East Mary Street area at approximately 630 a.m. Cumberland Police Department and the Allegany County Search Management Team conducted a large scale search operation in the area of the Mason Sports Complex, and Jessica Roman was located just after 1:30 p.m. 

Pine Avenue Assault Arrest

On July 26th, 2025 at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Cumberland Police responded to the 400 block of Pine Avenue for an assault. Upon arrival officers made contact with several witnesses in the area that advised Leon Frank Corley had threatened a victim with a machete. The officers then spoke with a victim who corroborated the events of the incident. Later, officers were able to locate the weapon nearby. Corley was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. Corley was presented in front of a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany Detention Center without bond.  NAME: Leon…

A new business in downtown Cumberland held its ribbon cutting on Friday with City officials on hand. Doll's Fitness located at 49 North Liberty Street provides 24 hour access and is exclusively for women. Department of Housing says Presidential Executive Order on Homelessness attempt on Fear, Division and Hate

Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development released the following statement regarding the President’s Executive Order on homelessness: "We believe housing is a fundamental human right. Institutionalizing those with challenges, such as substance abuse, mental health issues, or employment, goes against every proven best practice to reduce homelessness – practices that Maryland has used to reduce unsheltered homelessness by 42%. This executive order is yet another attempt to drive a stake of fear, division and hate through the heart of every community in our nation. Maryland believes in more, and our armor is strong."  

Senator McKay Under Review for Ethics Violation

Two self-published books by State Senator Mike McKay are under review for possible ethics violations.  The website Maryland Matters reports that McKay’s books reviewing legislative sessions are being examined by a legislative ethics panel and the Maryland State Board of Elections.  “The 90 Day Report,” a paperback available on Amazon, provides a detailed look at every bill Senator McKay sponsored or cast a final vote on during the 2024 and 2025 General Assembly Sessions.  The full article is available at marylandmatters.org.

Baltimore and Washington Continue Traffic Woes

Baltimore is now ranked as the ninth-worst city for traffic in the United States, according to a new analysis by ConsumerAffairs.  The study, which evaluated data such as commute times, traffic congestion and fatal crash rates across the 50 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas, highlighted Baltimore’s growing traffic woes.  Washington, D.C. was ranked as the worst city for traffic.  

Paw Paw Teacher Resigns

A Morgan County teacher has resigned his job after being arrested by Virginia authorities.  Sam Hopkins, a special education teacher at Paw Paw, has been charged by sheriff’s deputies in Louisa County, VA.  Hopkins is charged with solicitation of a minor, adultery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

City Police Report for Saturday

Criminal Summons Served On July 25th, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Sherman E. Denmark. The criminal summons was issued as a result of an incident that occurred on July 16th, 2025 on Baltimore Street. A Cumberland Police officer responded to an address for a trespassing complaint. Upon arrival, they located Denmark who was found to be trespassing, and as a citation was being issued to Denmark he left the scene without notice. Fly-In, Drive-In Breakfast Sunday

The Experimental Aircraft Association will be having its monthly fly-in, drive-in breakfast at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport on Sunday morning from 8 until Noon.  Breakfast is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12.  The breakfast features pancakes, eggs, sausage and sausage gravy, fruit cocktail along with coffee and juice. 

Ellerslie Days This Weekend

Ellerslie Days runs through Sunday at the Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Department field.  Events on Saturday include live music from Noon till 9pm, fireworks at 9:15pm along with a golf simulator, bull riding and vendors.  On Sunday, live music begins at 10am and the day features rock wall climbing and axe throwing. This is the seventh year for the community festival.
