WVDOT Launches “Check Your Height, Know it’s Right”

All week long, the West Virginia Department of Transportation is bringing awareness to making sure drivers of overly large vehicles make sure they clear low-clearance bridges.  “Check Your Height, Know it’s Right” targets all types of drivers, including CDL holders, as well as those driving leased or rented box trucks—such as delivery vans and moving trucks—and recreational vehicles.  WVDOT will share graphics with safety reminders across its official social media channels through Saturday, July 26.

Park Street Closed Friday

City of Cumberland reports on Friday, July 25, 2025, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, northbound Park Street will be closed to traffic for the preparation of tying in the new water main. We apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience while our crews complete their work.

Trump Administration Rejects Emergency Funding for Local Flooding

The Trump Administration announced Wednesday that it has denied federal assistance to Western Maryland following May’s flooding along Georges Creek.  Governor Wes Moore said that the flooding clearly met FEMA’s own standards for federal assistance.  The governor said Maryland will appeal the decision to deny federal funding.  Maryland requested the funding on June 13, asking for almost 16 million dollars in emergency money.  Governor Wes Moore stated, “We will continue to stand with our fellow Marylanders in Western Maryland as they rebuild from the damage caused in May.”

Mechanic Street Construction Thursday

Downtown drivers need to be on alert Thursday on Mechanic Street.  The City of Cumberland has announced that Mechanic Street will have a lane shift Thursday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.  The impacted area will be between Baltimore Street and Frederick Street.  Two-way traffic will still be in place but vehicles will be redirected Thursday as needed. 

Federal Parole Violation Warrant Served

On July 22nd, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served a  federal parole violation warrant on Kenneth Antonio Wilkins. The warrant charges Wilkins with a violation of parole. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond. Arrest Warrant Served

On July 22nd, 2025 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Robert Lee Dozier Jr. The warrant was issued as a result of an investigation conducted by a Cumberland Police officer on January 21st, 2025. During the investigation, the officer learned that a victim had been assaulted by Dozier. The officer observed injury consistent with the victim's statement and filed charges against Dozier, who had already left the area. Dozier was transported to Central Booking and was later seen by a District Court Commissioner where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond. NAME:…

Public Radio Speaking Out On Cuts

Public radio stations are speaking out about the loss of federal funding from the recently passed rescission package. Over one billion dollars is being clawed back from the past two years of funding as well ending future funding. New Bike Trail In Savage River Forest

Savage River State Forest has opened four new mountain-bike trails, including an adaptive trail. The trails range from 1.4 to 2 miles in length and feature varied terrain for hikers and bikers. Known as the Margraff Plantation Trail System, the trails offer a variety of experiences over 6 miles in one location. The adaptive trail is the first of its kind in a state forest as part of the Moore-Miller Administration commitment to making lives better for state residents.

Rabies confirmed in feral kitten in Cumberland

Allegany County Health Department is reporting that a feral cat associated with a colony of cats located in an area between the AES Warrior Run and the Webstaurant properties in Mexico Farms tested positive for rabies.  The cat was sent for testing on Monday, July 21, 2025 and a report of the positive test was received late Tuesday. Public Meeting On Comprehensive Plan

Every ten years, the State of Maryland asks cities to review and update the comprehensive plan for their communities. The plan helps guide public policy in a number of areas including housing, infrastructure, and public services.
