Abatement Procedures Being Revised
Cumberland residents may soon see new procedures put in place to deal with code enforcement issues. The city’s department of Community Development is working on revising procedures to shorten the time between complaints and resolution from months to weeks. Abatement issues include high grass, junk and debris, and properties unfit for habitation. CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On November 6, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served two criminal summonses on Timothy Mejias following separate theft investigations at a store located in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue. The incidents occurred on November 5 and November 6, 2025. On both occasions, Mejias allegedly concealed several items on his person and left the business without paying for them. After reviewing security footage, officers were able to positively identify Mejias as the suspect. Mountain Ridge Principal To Retire
Allegany County Public Schools Superintendent of Schools Michael J. Martirano, Ed.D. announced today that Danny Carter, principal of Mountain Ridge High School in Frostburg, has shared his decision to retire. His last day as principal is November 26. “We wish to thank Mr. Carter for his 46 years of dedicated service to the students of Mountain Ridge, Braddock Middle, Fort Hill, and Flintstone schools. Maryland Sues Trump Administration over FBI Building Location
Maryland officials sued the Trump administration Thursday for blocking the previously-approved construction of new FBI headquarters just outside the nation’s capital in Greenbelt. Governor Wes Moore joined other Maryland leaders to criticize the plan to move the FBI’s headquarters several blocks from its current home in Washington to the Ronald Reagan Building complex, instead of to Greenbelt, Maryland. The Greenbelt site had been selected by the Biden administration after years of planning.

Perhaps the most powerful national politician ever born in Maryland has announced her retirement from Congress. Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi made the announcement Thursday. Pelosi was born in Baltimore, the daughter of Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro.
Construction at Key Bridge Site
Construction crews are beginning to drive massive cylindrical piles into the Patapsco riverbed, part of the next stage of the expedited rebuilding of Baltimore’s fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge. The website Maryland Matters reports that if everything goes right, some of these steel piles could later form part of the new Key Bridge.

Drivers Misunderstand “Slow Down, Move Over” Law
Every state has a “Slow Down, Move Over” law on the books, but a recent AAA study shows two-thirds of drivers across the nation don’t fully understand the law. Ribbon Cutting Set for Skate Park
The long-awaited Cumberland Skate Park will have its opening day this Saturday, beginning at 11am with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Skate Park is located inside the Gene Mason Sports Complex in South Cumberland. Following the opening celebration, the park will be open for use to skate boarders and food trucks will also be on hand. Construction began at the site in April of this year. The Skate Park was designed for the city by Rampage Skateshop in Connecticut.
