On Monday, June 24th, 2024, officers with the Cumberland Police Dept. observed a Volkswagen Jetta operating on Maryland Ave. Officers observed the vehicles operator actively using a cell phone while driving and also observed the vehicle cross the center line. Officers then activated their emergency equipment to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. At that time, the vehicle began to accelerate and failed to stop for officers. On Monday, June 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Michael Anthony Hagenbuch, 32, of Ridgeley WV. Hagenbuch was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on May 10th. The warrant alleged Hagenbuch failed to obey the terms and conditions of probation that stemmed from a previous theft charge. He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Queen City Drive Arrest
On Monday, June 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police received an online tip of a black in color Chevrolet Suburban operating recklessly in the area of Queen City Drive. Video of the incident showed the vehicle being operated by a white male, spinning tires and driving erratically. A short time later, officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of Linden St for the report of a disturbance. Ransomware Hits Car Dealers
Car dealerships are continuing to deal with a major ransomware attack on software that provides backend services for sales and repairs. Dina Wilson of Timbrook KIA, spoke to WCBC on Monday morning about the attack, saying it was broad-based and impacting operations locally… Wilson says that CDK is working on the issue and national reports say that software company CDK is paying hackers a ransom to get their information systems back on line…
Former BGS&G Vice President Passes
The former executive vice president of the BGS&G companies has passed away. Fredrick John Hill, 94, passed on June 19. A reception will be held on July 13 at 11am at the Scarpelli Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Noon at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery.
Miss America Pageant “Gold Standard”
Miss Allegany County Bridget O’Brien has been crowned Miss Maryland through the Miss America scholarship pageant program. She takes over from another Allegany County winner from last year, Kennedy Taylor. Country Club Mall Air Conditioning Issues Continue
Most of the Country Club Mall is without air conditioning with no concrete timetable for a repair. Stores have been closing early during the recent heatwave while others have been working with makeshift air conditioning units to cool their stores. Calls to Namdar Realty who owns the property redirected questions to the local mall who was hesitant to answer questions other than to say a repair is in progress. Walmart and the Country Club Mall Cinemas have independent cooling systems not affected by the outage.
