Special Prosecutor May Seek Jail Time For Buckel
Not taking a field sobriety test may have been a bad choice for Jason Buckel, Maryland’s House Minority leader. Buckel was stopped and later arrested in mid-June on DUI charges. A special prosecutor has been appointed in the case from Frederick County and he has filed an intention to seek an enhanced penalty which could result in two months of jail time and/or a $500 fine. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Bench Warrant on Tavon Torrell Gray. The Allegany County District Court issued the warrant for Failing to Appear at trial. The original charges stemmed from an incident on June 18th, 2024 where Gray was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Disturbing the Public Peace. Royal Farms Will Increase Competition
The location of the new Royal Farms off the Maryland Avenue exit of Interstate 68 is still in its early stages, but positive effects are expected. STAR Card Available for Students
The Allegany County Library is offering a Student Access Resource card, or STAR card for the upcoming school year. Coalition Planning on Supreme Court Challenge
This week the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld Maryland’s assault weapons ban. The ban was enacted in 2013 following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. The ban affects dozens of firearms, including the AK-47 and the Barrett .50-caliber sniper rifle, and it places a 10-round limit on gun magazines. The non-profit Firearms Policy Coalition said it will immediately take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, calling the decision “flawed.”
