A C3I investigation into a Home Invasion/Armed Robbery that occurred on Columbia Street in Cumberland led to several arrests. Wednesday, June 19, 2024 Joseph Adam Staples, 38 of Cumberland, was arrested without incident at his home and served a District Court Arrest Warrant for Armed Robbery. Additional charges included Firearm Use/Felony-Violent Crime, 2 counts of Assault-First Degree, 2 counts of Assault-Second Degree, Home Invasion, and Burglary-First Degree. Initially held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center, at a subsequent bail review, a $15,000 bond was set by a Judge. Staples is being held at the Allegany County Detention Center…

Great Race Finish Line today in Frostburg
Frostburg is going all out today for the Great Race Main Street Stage Finish Line. Festivities are taking place all day with the main event getting underway at 5PM. Activities include the Frostburg Museum, Thrasher Carriage Museum at the Depot, City Place Model Train Display will open for afternoon and evening enjoyment. Derby Days Cars will be on display. Children will be allowed to sit in some of the Great Race cars for pictures. Restaurants and stores on Mail Street will be open including the race headquarters bar at the Toasted Goat and Lashbaugh's West with specials.
FSU Receives Grant To Boost Voter Efforts
The Help Americans Vote College Program has awarded Frostburg State University a grant to encourage college students to serve as nonpartisan poll workers in the 2024 election. The university’s Office of Civic Engagement will use the $2,000 grant for a print marketing campaign and information sessions to recruit poll workers and provide access to necessary training. The college hopes to engage 15 students to become poll workers for the November election.
Museum Exhibit Explores Downtown History
A new exhibit at the Allegany Museum on Pershing Street in Cumberland is taking visitors on a trip through the history of the main thoroughfare of downtown Cumberland. Students in Allegany High School’s Historical Research Methods class developed and designed the exhibit that opened in May at the museum and will run through September 1. ASSAULT/DISORDERLY CONDUCT ARRESTS
On Sunday, June 23, 2024 at approximately 2:26 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was on patrol in the area of Pershing Street and S. Mechanic Street when he observed a large crowd that had formed outside of a business. As the officer approached the crowd, he heard someone yell for help and observed a female fall to the ground. A male suspect then began fleeing the scene on foot. The officer caught up to the suspect and identified him as Braydien McKenize. It was learned that McKenzie had assaulted a female subject. CRIMINAL SUMMONSES SERVED
On Sunday, June 23, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served criminal summonses on Mina Day, Lazaya Lee, Mariah Lee, and Lya Smith. The summonses were issued in connection with an assault investigation that began on June 22, 2024. On this date between 6:10 AM and 7:36 AM AM, officers responded to multiple locations throughout the city for suspects spraying victims with a fire extinguisher. The multiple victims reported that the suspects would drive by in a vehicle and spray them. On Sunday, June 23, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Joshua Clark Sr. The warrant was issued in connection with a theft investigation. On June 17, 2024 at approximately 7:35 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Virginia Avenue for a theft. Officers contacted the victim who reported that Joshua Clark stole his phone. During the investigation, police learned that Clark was using the victim’s phone to contact a subject who currently has a Protective Order against him. Hot Weather Not Stopping Polar Express Planning
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Polar Express Movie with Tom Hanks and Cumberland native Eddie Deezen. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is planning its season of Polar Express trains to the North Pole and already 4,000 tickets are booked, according to Wes Heinz, Railroad Director. NRP Officers Get Body Cams
Following a 12-month pilot program, Maryland Natural Resources Police has officially implemented an agency-wide program in which every sworn officer will wear cameras while on duty. Officers were fully trained and outfitted with body cameras more than one year ahead of the July 1, 2025 target deadline set in state law. Officers are required to upload their footage by the end of their shifts, which they can do when connected to their mobile workstation or via a docking system.
