City Purchases Paving Equipment

The City of Cumberland is in the paving business. At last week’s mayor and council meeting, approvals were given for the purchase of a Caterpillar Asphalt paver along with an asphalt roller.  The city has also been contracting out paving for streets, but Mayor Ray Morriss says this equipment will help increase the efforts to improve roadways in the area…    

Building Restoration Brings Business

Local business owners Chris Hendershot and Garrett Eagan have worked to develop both the McMullen and Rosenbaum buildings on Baltimore Street into revived commercial and residential properties.  Eagan talked with WCBC about the work on the Rosenbaum that has a full first floor of businesses… He says they have received a lot of support from the city and county, as well as the area’s residents interested in the development of shopping and restaurants…

Carotid Duplex Ultrasounds Can Find Issues Early

The carotid arteries sit on either side of the neck, carrying blood to the brain.  Blocked carotids can lead to a stroke or transient ischemic attack.  Early detection of any blockage or narrowing is important to avoiding such health issues.  Dr. J Kim of Advanced Diagnostic Radiology says a Carotid Duplex Ultrasound can be used to check carotid arteries for any problems, but a physician should refer patients for screenings…    

CNA/GNA Training Offered For High School Students

High school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to receive training as nursing assistants in a new program at Lighthouse Christian Academy.  Lighthouse is a K-12 school on Bedford Road in Cumberland and this fall will kick off their new Health Care Occupations program.  Mandy Bise, RN – school nurse at Lighthouse, says students finishing the training will be able to work as Certified Nursing Assistants or Geriatric Nursing Assistants or continue their education… Some requirements are needed to join the program. Students must enroll at the school by July 31…

Great Race Frostburg Finish Line

Frostburg is going all out Monday for the Great Race Main Street Stage Finish Line. Festivities are taking place all day with the main event getting underway at 5PM. Activities include the Frostburg Museum, Thrasher Carriage Museum at the Depot, City Place Model Train Display will open for afternoon and evening enjoyment. Derby Days Cars will be on display. Children will be allowed to sit in some of the Great Race cars for pictures. Restaurants and stores on Mail Street will be open including the race headquarters bar at the Toasted Goat and Lashbaugh's West with Monday specials.  

Bridget O’Brien is the new Miss Maryland

For the second consecutive year, Miss Allegany County is the new Miss Maryland of the Miss AMERICA Organization.  Miss America Organization is a scholarship pageant, not to be confused with Miss USA which is a contest with a modeling contract and liberal rules and regulations for the contestants.  Bridget O'Brien was crowned at the Maryland Theatre Saturday night. Amateur Radio “Field Day” event is underway in LaVale

Members of the Mountain Amateur Radio Club our participating in the 83 annual national amateur radio Field Day exercise at 599 Georges Creek Blvd, the old LaVale swimming pool. Field day exercise is a 24-hour competition, simulating emergency conditions as radio operators communicate around the country. State Prison Inmate Death Investigation

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate in Allegany County. The inmate is identified as Ralph Ruark, 80.  Ruark was declared deceased by emergency medical service personnel. He was a state prison inmate serving time at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. Ruark was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of death. At 4:10 p.m. yesterday, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU) about an inmate death that occurred…

Mechanic / Baltimore St. Intersection reduced to one lane Monday,

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Belt Paving, would like to notify the public that Mechanic Street / Baltimore Street Intersection will be reduced to one lane with flagging operations Monday, 6/24, and Tuesday, 6/25. Paving operations will occur between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Traffic devices and signage will be in place to route vehicles through the paving operation.  Traffic is expected to be fully restored after work is completed at 4:00 PM on each day.
