The Cumberland Historic Preservation Commission Meeting for the month of June will be held Wednesday, June 12th, at 4pm. The meeting will now take place at City Hall, 57 N. Liberty Street, Cumberland, MD 21502. Please note that the meeting will no longer take place at Allegany Museum. Garden Club Sets 2024 Tour
The Garden Club of Cumberland Annual Tour theme this year is “City Living Tour – Discover Big, Little Surprises in Cumberland.” Tickets for the June 22 event are available on the WCBC Radio Auction. Eight stops are included this year with four close together on Centre Street. Music Academy Still Accepting Registration
Mountainside Baroque Music Academy is having its fifth gathering this year and the deadline to register is looming. Young music students in middle and high school and early college will have the opportunity for individual and group instruction under national performers in violin, viola, cello, keyboard, flute, lute and voice as well as present a recital on June 21. Arrest Warrant Served
On June 6, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence on Beechwood Drive for a disturbance. When Officers arrived, each person involved provided details regarding the issue. Each individual was advised of their rights at District Court. As a result, Mr. Platter received two charges. Platter was arrested on June 10, 2024 and then taken to Central Booking. Arrest: Christopher Alan Platter, age 39, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Assault 2nd degree and arson threat.
Criminal Summons Served
On March 31, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police were advised that a male subject was assaulted by Katherine Legeer. The male indicated that he was buckling his child up in a car operated by Legeer. Legeer then pulled away running over his foot. The male said that Legeer intentionally ran over his foot. The male indicated that he would pursue charges for the assault. On April 5, 2024, Officers responded to the Devlin Manor Nursing Home for a report of an assault. Fed Funding Will Help Congested Annapolis Roads
Members of Maryland’s Congressional delegation announced new federal funding to improve road safety in Annapolis. US Senators Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin along with Congressman John Sarbanes said over $600,000 is earmarked to help Maryland’s capital install AI-based traffic signal technology designed to prevent accidents. Funding will be through the US Department of Transportation Safe Streets and Roads grant program.
Fees Hidden In State Budget Coming To Light
The Maryland General Assembly patted itself on the back for passage of a balanced budget this year, hyping the “bipartisan” agreements. However, coming to light now are fees that were either raised or newly instituted in the budget. These include large increases in car registration fees, the cigarette tax and new fees for a “greener” state.
