WV Appeals For Power Plant Stay

The state of West Virginia has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency stay of the Environmental Protection Agency new rule on power plants.  Attorney General Patrick Morrisey filed the appeal Tuesday, seeking relief from the government agency’s enforcement of rules on coal and natural gas power plants.  Several states joined West Virginia’s appeal as Morrisey claims the Environmental Protection Agency is ignoring limits imposed in the 2022 case of West Virginia vs. EPA.

Warrants Served

On 07/25/2024 at approximately 6:00 AM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 300 block of Baltimore Avenue for a motor vehicle crash. The accident was investigated and a tow truck was requested to remove the at fault vehicle. When the tow truck began to remove the at fault vehicle, the driver Joshua Moore began to yell and stood in front of the tow truck blocking it from leaving. An officer advised Moore to stop creating a disturbance. Moore continued yelling which caused a resident of the 300 block of Baltimore Avenue to come outside and observe the…

City of Cumberland Announces Details on Local Government Academy

The City of Cumberland invites participation in the first annual Citizens Local Government Academy. This program will provide opportunities to local residents to learn more about the town government and how it operates by attending a variety of sessions and other activities. The Citizens Local Government Academy includes a 7-week class schedule, one class per week, and each class is expected to run for two hours. Augmented Reality Experience

As part of Maryland’s Heritage Project Grant Awards, Canal Place in Cumberland received $14,000 for a new historic experience for visitors to Allegany County. Maryland Added Jobs in June

Maryland added 5,600 total jobs in June, including 3,900 in the private sector, according to monthly data released by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. The new data also included an upward revision of the state’s May employment numbers, increasing last month’s growth by 700 jobs to a total of 7,100 jobs. Through the first half of 2024, Maryland has added 27,800 total jobs and grown faster than any other state in the country. Maryland’s labor force grew by 6,400 workers in June. Maryland exceeded the national labor force participation rate, which is 62.6 percent.

City Firefighters Here For Their Careers

Firefighters recently ratified a new three-year contract with the City of Cumberland. Downtown Disturbance Arrest

On Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, at approximately 8:11 am, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of the Downtown Mall for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, contact was made with the complainant who advised a male was using a golf club to hit signs in the construction zone. The male was also observed screaming at the crew working in the area. During the investigation, it was discovered that the male entered a nearby apartment building. Officers located Thomas Scannell Jr. and the golf club inside the building. As a result, Scannell was placed under arrest for destruction…
