Allegany County Public Schools has announced assistant principal staffing updates for the 2024-2025 school year. These updates include the appointment of new assistant principals: Amanda Biser, Washington Middle; Kathryn Johnson, West Side Elementary; Neil Kamp, Westmar Middle; Shaun Lewis, AP Coordinator of Alternative Programs, RESTART Program at Eckhart; Windy Price, Beall Elementary; and Janel Shoemaker, Cash Valley Elementary. Royal Farms Set For Rolling Mill
It’s been almost ten years since the city of Cumberland began buying up properties at Rolling Mill but it finally looks as though a business enterprise is coming soon. The Cumberland Times-News reports that Royal Farms will move into a 1.5 acre site just off I 68. CEDC Director Matt Miller said there is a signed agreement in place. Royal Farms is based in Baltimore and operates over 200 convenience stores in the East.
MD State Board Of Ed Elects New President, Vice President
The Maryland State Board of Education voted unanimously to elect Dr. Joshua Michael as President and Dr. Monica Goldson as Vice President for the 2024-2025 term. Dr. Michael was appointed to the State Board by Gov. Wes Moore in April 2023. As President, he brings experience as an educator, public school parent, and policy expert to his service. Writing on X, he'll speak about what lies ahead and how he'll finish the job for the American people. The president announced Sunday, he would not continue his re-election campaign and was endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic nominee. Boost Grant To Casselman Creamery
Casselman Creamery located in Grantsville was awarded a $50,000 Business Boost Grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The grant is part of a $16.2 million initiative announced by Governor Wes Moore to support small businesses and community revitalization across Maryland. Casselman Creamery will use the grant to upgrade facilities, implement advance dairy processing technologies, and enhance its marketing efforts.
Secret Service Chief Resigns
The head of the Secret Service is resigning her position. Following five hours of testimony on Monday on Capitol Hill , Kiimberly Chealte is stepping down. She testified for five hours on Capital Hill yesterday about security lapses in Secret Service coverage of former President Donald Trump. Those lapses led to a gunman being able to shoot at the president at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one rally attendee and injuring others. Previously, Cheatle had said she would not resign her position.
County United Way’s Stuff the Bus!
The annual County United Way “Stuff the Bus” school supply drive to benefit students in Allegany County has returned this year. Stuff the Bus will take place on Friday, August 16, from 9 am to 5 pm in the Walmart and Staples parking lots in LaVale.
