Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Friday, July 19, 2024 Dylan Tydings Miles, 32 of Fort Ashby, was served a District Court Arrest Warrant for the following charges: 2 counts Fraud-Personal Identification to Avoid Prosecution, Disorderly Conduct and Obstruction and Hindering. Miles also has an arrest warrant through Franklin County, Pennsylvania for Failure to Appear for the charge of: Criminal Mischief-Damage Property. Warrant is logged as a detainer. More Maryland Leaders Endorse Harris For President

Falling in behind U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and Governor Wes Moore, more Maryland Democrats are announcing their endorsement of Kamala Harris for the U.S. Presidency. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller both added their support on Monday afternoon. Lt. Governor Miller said in a statement, “When Vice President Harris is sworn in as the 47th President of United States in January 2025, after almost 250 years, a woman of color will write our nation's next chapter-one built on inclusivity, opportunity, and hope.”

Library System Seeking Advisory Members

With a 10% cut to their budget, Ashley Swinford says the Allegany County Library System is creating an advisory committee. According to Swinford, six community members will join library staff to advise the library board of trustees on sustainable and cost-effective measures. The first meeting is scheduled for August 8th at 6pm and the committee will meet monthly through January. Ashley Swinford said specifically selecting community members to voice the needs of their committee. Work Beginning On New Hiker/Biker Trail

Work has begun on a new hiking and biking trail through Constitution Park in Cumberland. The new project is actually three intersecting trails, including one that will be mericans with Disabilities Act accessible.  Global Action Sports from Wisconsin has been working with the city to build the new trail and it should take about four months before it is finished. Heritage Management and Block Grants To Canal Place

More than $5 million in Heritage Project Grant Awards will support heritage tourism projects and expand economic development and tourism-related jobs across Maryland.  $100,000 management grant which will go toward operation and administration of authority properties. Deidra Richie, Executive Director of the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority said they received $25,000 block grant goes out to the community as many grants which are non-match grants between $500 and $5,000 that are available to qualified local government entities and non-profits within the heritage area…    

Obstructing and Hindering, Controlled Dangerous Substance, Assault on Police Arrest

On Monday July 22nd, 2024, at approximately 6:57 pm Officers of the Cumberland Police Department observed Malakhi Henderson in the area of the 500 block of Woodside Avenue, who had an active Arrest Warrant through the Circuit Court. Officers contacted Henderson who attempted to provide a false name, and fled from officers. After a brief foot pursuit, Henderson was apprehended with the assistance of a citizen in the 600 block of Elm Street. Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

On Tuesday July 23rd, 2024 at approximately 12:08 am officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash near the intersection of Willowbrook Road and I-68 East Bound. Upon officer’s arrival they observed white Jeep to be off the roadway and appeared to have struck a tree, and the operator of the vehicle to be unresponsive. Officers began life saving measures until the arrival of the Cumberland Fire Department who took over patient care. Traffic Detour On I-70 At US 522 Planned for Wednesday Night

Maryland State Highway Administration will detour traffic on I-70 at US 522 in Hancock beginning Wednesday night, July 24  at 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday, July 25, weather permitting.  Both directions of I-70 at US 522 will be detoured.  The closure is necessary as crews prepare for the demolition phase of the bridge project. The entire project is expected to be complete by fall 2025, weather permitting.
