West Virginia Wins Part of Talc Settlement

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and a coalition of 42 attorneys general reached a $700 million settlement to resolve allegations related to the marketing of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and body powder products that contained talc. West Virginia will receive almost $6 million dollars. The lawsuit contends that the company misled consumers about the safety and purity of some of its talc powder products. Offshore Energy Means Jobs To Governor Moore

Offshore wind projects on both coasts of the United States are ongoing in an attempt to harness wind power for energy.  Maryland, through the efforts of U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and the White House, is set to develop two such wind farms off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. The wind energy would enable the state to make progress toward its climate and clean energy goals.  According to Governor Wes Moore, it will not only create energy, but also well-paying jobs for the state…

On June 11, 2024, Officers served a Bench Warrant for failure to appear on Kimberly A. Carnley. Carnley was transported to Central Booking. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office report

Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Tuesday, June 11, 2024 Adam Lee Shipway, 45 of Cumberland, was served two District Court warrants. An arrest warrant for Escape-2nd Degree and Obstruction of Justice and a bench warrant for Violation of Probation. Shipway is currently being held without bond in both cases. Casey Joe Douglass, 33 of Lonaconing, was served three (3) District Court Warrants. Two (2) Bench Warrants for Violation of Probation stemming from the original conviction of two (2) counts…

The Cumberland Historic Preservation Commission Meeting for the month of June will be held Wednesday, June 12th, at 4pm. The meeting will now take place at City Hall, 57 N. Garden Club Sets 2024 Tour

The Garden Club of Cumberland Annual Tour theme this year is “City Living Tour – Discover Big, Little Surprises in Cumberland.” Tickets for the June 22 event are available on the WCBC Radio Auction. Eight stops are included this year with four close together on Centre Street.  Charlotte Lapp of the Garden Club says the tour kicks off at the Maryland Extension Office at Nave’s Crossroads with plant experts on site and a working vegetable garden…    

Music Academy Still Accepting Registration

Mountainside Baroque Music Academy is having its fifth gathering this year and the deadline to register is looming.  Young music students in middle and high school and early college will have the opportunity for individual and group instruction under national performers in violin, viola, cello, keyboard, flute, lute and voice as well as present a recital on June 21. Arrest Warrant Served

On June 6, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence on Beechwood Drive for a disturbance. When Officers arrived, each person involved provided details regarding the issue. Each individual was advised of their rights at District Court. As a result, Mr. Platter received two charges.  Platter was arrested on June 10, 2024 and then taken to Central Booking.   Arrest: Christopher Alan Platter, age 39, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Assault 2nd degree and arson threat.

Criminal Summons Served

On March 31, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police were advised that a male subject was assaulted by Katherine Legeer. The male indicated that he was buckling his child up in a car operated by Legeer. Legeer then pulled away running over his foot. The male said that Legeer intentionally ran over his foot. The male indicated that he would pursue charges for the assault. On April 5, 2024, Officers responded to the Devlin Manor Nursing Home for a report of an assault.
