Reopening of Port of Baltimore Celebrated
March 26 saw the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, halting all shipping from the East Coast’s largest port. Now, just 11 weeks after the disaster, the port is fully reopened to its original operating dimensions of 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep. Union Still Waiting To Hear From County
A quick check-in on Tuesday with Union President for the International Association of Firefighters, Steve Corioni revealed that there is still nothing for the union to vote on from Allegany County. Corioni said they are waiting on information from the county attorney so a vote can be taken. The county and Emergency Medical Services are working to come to an agreement that would save a $2 million dollar cut to EMS funding in the county budget for fiscal year 2025.
Elks To Celebrate National Flag Day June 14
Friday, June 14th is National Flag Day and the Frostburg Elks will celebrate by holding a Flag Day Ceremony in the lodge parking lot at 6:00pm. The ceremony by Elks officers will include music performed by the Frostburg Arion Band. A history of different flags used throughout America’s past will be presented, assisted by Boy Scouts and Webelos from Troop and Pack 24, the Frostburg American Legion color guard and members of Frostburg City Police. The ceremony is open to the public.
ARREST WARRANT SERVED
On June 12th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Dove Ariana Schiavone. The warrant was issued after an investigation was completed for an assault that occurred on Winifred Road. Officers responded to Winifred Road on June 11th, 2024, and contacted a victim who advised officers that she was struck by Schiavone’s closed fist several times. Officers were able to observe visible injuries that were consistent with the victim’s statement. An application for charges was filed at District Court and a warrant was issued for Schiavone. BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On June 12th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Cynthia Lou Shipway. The warrant was issued after Shipway violated terms of her probation, after failing to appear to District Court on May 30th, 2024. She was served the warrant and transported to Central Booking where she was later seen by a District Court commissioner and was released on her own recognizance. West Virginia Increases Hires At Health Facilities
The West Virginia Department of Health Facilities has hired more than 80 new employees at its state-run facilities, following implementation of new recruitment and retention initiatives. These efforts have resulted in new hires, including converting 40 contracted staff to state employees, and decreased the vacancy rate by eight percent. The new system is designed to boost recruitment and retention initiatives and is based on recommendations from a market study conducted by Korn Ferry.
WVU, NBA Legend Jerry West Passes at 86
The NBA has lost their “Logo.” Legend Jerry West passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 86. The player, coach and executive played at WVU from 1958-60 before playing 14 years with the Lakers, beginning when the team was in Minneapolis. He then became the Lakers coach for three years before moving into front office work, building the Lakers team as well as the Grizzlies and the Clippers. Jerry West remains the player featured on the NBA logo.
CEDC Applying For Restore 2.0 Funding
The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is applying for $300,000 through Maryland Housing and Community Development. The grant money from the Restore 2.0 Program enables the city to assist new businesses with start-up costs that locate in the primary business district. Traffic Stop Arrest
On June 11, 2024, An Officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for numerous traffic violations. The Officer made contact with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The Officer then requested her driver’s license and registration. The drivers stated that she did not possess her license and provided a name and date of birth. Due to the Officers observations, he requested a Police K9 to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. One in five senior citizens over age 65 have been the victims of fraud, losing almost $3 billion a year to identity theft and con artists.
