Historic Ghost Tours this weekend in Cumberland

Cumberland Historic Ghost Tours will conduct a one-hour walking tour of Cumberland’s most haunted sites on Saturday, June 15, at 7:00 PM. The tour will begin at the Allegany County Library on Washington Street where guests will be greeted by guides in historic costumes. Guests will continue through the historic district exploring supernatural sightings reported by area residents as well as stories of local legendary fame. CSX speaking publicly on construction underway at Cumberland’s yard

CSX is finally speaking publicly about work they are doing in the Cumberland yards.  The CSX official Facebook page features a story and video posted Wednesday evening about work being done at the “hump” to handle increased traffic more efficiently.  The video shows the demolition of the hump and plans are for installation of a new switching ladder. Work Continues On Downtown Streets

The streets of the reimagined downtown Cumberland are taking shape day by day. Application Window Open For Rocky Gap Slot Funds

Applications are now available for grants from Allegany County to municipalities and non-profits through the Rocky Gap Slot funds.  Since 2014, Allegany County has received 5.5% of the slot revenues generated from casino operations at Rocky Gap. The application period to request funds through the Capital Projects Grant is open through June 30, according to County Administrator Jason Bennett…   

Potomac State College Without A Softball Coach

Last week, the head coach of the Potomac State College Girls Softball team resigned his position, citing funding cuts to the travel budget. In reports, Coach Craig Rotruck said that without the ability to travel to play in tourneys and against four-year schools, his players lose the chance to be seen by recruiters. WCBC news contacted Potomac State University Relations Representative Chris Hess who confirmed that non-essential travel funding was cut from all sports. Reopening of Port of Baltimore Celebrated

March 26 saw the destruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, halting all shipping from the East Coast’s largest port.  Now, just 11 weeks after the disaster, the port is fully reopened to its original operating dimensions of 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep.  Over 50,000 tons of crumpled steel was removed from the Patapsco River by the Army Corps of Engineers.  At a press conference on Wednesday, Governor Moore praised the efforts of everyone involved, stressing the importance of the Port of Baltimore… Governor Moore said the work is not done. Union Still Waiting To Hear From County

A quick check-in on Tuesday with Union President for the International Association of Firefighters, Steve Corioni  revealed that there is still nothing for the union to vote on from Allegany County.  Corioni said they are waiting on information from the county attorney so a vote can be taken.  The county and Emergency Medical Services are working to come to an agreement that would save a $2 million dollar cut to EMS funding in the county budget for fiscal year 2025.

Elks To Celebrate National Flag Day June 14

Friday, June 14th is National Flag Day and the Frostburg Elks will celebrate by holding a Flag Day Ceremony in the lodge parking lot at 6:00pm. The ceremony by Elks officers will include music performed by the Frostburg Arion Band. A history of different flags used throughout America’s past will be presented, assisted by Boy Scouts and Webelos from Troop and Pack 24, the Frostburg American Legion color guard and members of Frostburg City Police. The ceremony is open to the public.

ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On June 12th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Dove Ariana Schiavone. The warrant was issued after an investigation was completed for an assault that occurred on Winifred Road. Officers responded to Winifred Road on June 11th, 2024, and contacted a victim who advised officers that she was struck by Schiavone’s closed fist several times. Officers were able to observe visible injuries that were consistent with the victim’s statement. An application for charges was filed at District Court and a warrant was issued for Schiavone.  Schiavone was served the warrant and transported to Central Booking where…
