BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On June 12th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Cynthia Lou Shipway. The warrant was issued after Shipway violated terms of her probation, after failing to appear to District Court on May 30th, 2024. She was served the warrant and transported to Central Booking where she was later seen by a District Court commissioner and was released on her own recognizance. West Virginia Increases Hires At Health Facilities
The West Virginia Department of Health Facilities has hired more than 80 new employees at its state-run facilities, following implementation of new recruitment and retention initiatives. These efforts have resulted in new hires, including converting 40 contracted staff to state employees, and decreased the vacancy rate by eight percent. The new system is designed to boost recruitment and retention initiatives and is based on recommendations from a market study conducted by Korn Ferry.
WVU, NBA Legend Jerry West Passes at 86
The NBA has lost their “Logo.” Legend Jerry West passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 86. The player, coach and executive played at WVU from 1958-60 before playing 14 years with the Lakers, beginning when the team was in Minneapolis. He then became the Lakers coach for three years before moving into front office work, building the Lakers team as well as the Grizzlies and the Clippers. Jerry West remains the player featured on the NBA logo.
CEDC Applying For Restore 2.0 Funding
The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is applying for $300,000 through Maryland Housing and Community Development. The grant money from the Restore 2.0 Program enables the city to assist new businesses with start-up costs that locate in the primary business district. Traffic Stop Arrest
On June 11, 2024, An Officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for numerous traffic violations. The Officer made contact with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The Officer then requested her driver’s license and registration. The drivers stated that she did not possess her license and provided a name and date of birth. Due to the Officers observations, he requested a Police K9 to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. Attorney General Brown Speaks On Senior Scams
One in five senior citizens over age 65 have been the victims of fraud, losing almost $3 billion a year to identity theft and con artists. Throughout Maryland, “Protect Week” is bringing attention to the scams that often affect the older population, coming from outside bad actors or even close family members. Lottery Players Continue Big Wins Locally
Across Maryland, the Lottery paid more than $40 million in prizes during the seven-day period ending June 9, including 48 tickets worth $10,000 or more. Locally, an Electric 8’s scratch off game sold at Parkview Liquors on Greene Street was worth $88,000. Last week, a Westernport couple won $90,000 on the Lottery’s Big Spin Wheel and another Allegany County resident won $50,000 on the Bonus Match 5 game at the end of May.
Fetterman Home After I-70 Car Crash
Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman is back at home following a car crash over the weekend near Hancock. The crash occurred near the intersection of Interstates’ 70 and 68 when the car Fetterman was driving rear-ended another vehicle. Fetterman and his wife had a brief stay at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs where staff treated the Senator for a bruised shoulder. Buckel Says State Has A Spending Problem
Maryland’s Joint Republican Caucus is keeping track of the Moore Administration’s new and increased taxes and fees in a report published this week. The report notes that since taking office in 2023, Governor Moore has been responsible for over 330 new or increased taxes and fees on everything from paint to car registrations. West Virginia Wins Part of Talc Settlement
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and a coalition of 42 attorneys general reached a $700 million settlement to resolve allegations related to the marketing of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and body powder products that contained talc. West Virginia will receive almost $6 million dollars. The lawsuit contends that the company misled consumers about the safety and purity of some of its talc powder products.
