WVDOH awards contract to rebuild part of Interstate 79

A project to rebuild Interstate 79 from the ground up between the Roanoke exit and Jane Lew Road is among 26 construction projects awarded by the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The awards were from a bid letting conducted Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Mountaineer Contractors Inc. was awarded a contract for $15,603,905 to pulverize the existing pavement on the section of I-79 to create a new road base, part of the process of rebuilding the road from the ground up. Frankfort High School Tournament Update

The softball team lost in the finals Saturday afternoon to Winfield, 2-1.  The team completed the season at 29-2. The baseball team defeated Bridgeport, 10-6, to advance to the state tournament next week.  The Falcons are the defending state champions.

Short Gap Orioles vs. Keyser Braves for Mineral County Title

In a game broadcast by Classic Hits 107 Saturday evening, Short Gap defeated the Keyser Pirates, 13-3, to advance to the championship series finals vs. the Keyser Braves.  The Braves are undefeated and gave Short Gap its only loss of the season.  Classic Hits 107 will broadcast the series beginning Monday at 6 p.m.

Frankfort Softball Two Wins from State Title

Frankfort defeated Weir, 4-3, Saturday morning to earn a spot vs. Winfield this afternoon.  The Falcons need two wins to capture the title while Winfield just needs one win for the championship.

Moose Curve Accident Saturday Morning

All lanes of Interstate 68 eastbound were shut down as of 6:12 this morning in the area of Moose Curve.  Authorities report lanes have now opened as of 7 a.m.

FEMA Assessing Georges Creek Damage

The office of Congresswoman April McClain Delaney has estimated damages of 78 million dollars in the Georges Creek area due to flooding in mid-May.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been assessing the damage this week.

Traffic Changes Downtown Monday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department has announced that the Mechanic Street & Centre Street Viaduct Bridge intersection at Queen City Drive will be closed to thru traffic on Monday, June 2nd.  Traffic is expected to be restored by 8:00PM on June 2nd for Mechanic Street & Centre Street intersection at Queen City Drive.

Area Musician Passes

Longtime area music teacher Jean Miller has died at the age of 89.  Miller taught for years at Saints Peter and Paul School and Saint John Neumann.  She played clarinet and piano and was a member of the Potomac Concert Band.

Frankfort Baseball and Softball Update

The Frankfort baseball team, the defending state champions, play Bridgeport today at 2:30 in a decisive game 3 in their series.  The winner advances to the state tournament.  The softball team split two games Friday and will play Weir at 2:30 today.  The winner advances to the state title game later this afternoon.
