On Saturday, April 6th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police responded to the 1000 block of Myrtle St for the report of an assault in progress in the street. Upon arrival, officers observed a male subject attempting to leave the area on foot. When stopped, he advised he had only been in a verbal altercation with a female who had already left the scene. A short time later, the female victim was able to contact police by awakening a nearby neighbor for help. The victim advised she had been choked by the male subject in the street after a verbal altercation…

Teabow Residential’s plan for infill on several city lots was finalized with an agreement signed between the developer and the City of Cumberland. The lots are in six different areas of the city – Dr. Bowman said he enjoys helping people’s lives improve with the purchase of a home… Mayor Morriss says there is a plan to work with local lenders and real estate buyers to assist more first-time homeowners through incentives or other programs…

The Maryland State Police graduated 33 new troopers at a ceremony in Reisterstown. The 157th Academy class consists of military veterans, former police officers, college graduates and six were Maryland State Police cadets. Nearly 80% of students took advantage of the Associate of Applied Science Degree program, offered through Frederick Community College. Lt. The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland recently took a field trip of sorts to Frederick, Maryland for a look at economic development in that growing city. Frederick’s downtown and Carroll Creek area have some similarities with Cumberland’s retail center and Councilman Rock Cioni was pleased to see that Cumberland is on the right track, working collaboratively as do organizations in Frederick…    

President Joe Biden got a birds eye view of wreckage in the Patapsco River from the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Friday. Speaking at a press conference with Governor Wes Moore, Biden brought news of help to keep supply chains moving… The President also said the federal government would handle the repairs of the bridge, but the cost will be passed on to those responsible…

Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan made stops in Western Maryland on Friday. Hogan, a Republican, is starting his statewide campaign tour for the U.S. Senate. He started the day in Oakland with stops in Grantsville and LaVale before visiting WheelzUp Adventures in downtown Cumberland. Hogan tells WCBC that Western Maryland was picked specifically to kick off his “Back To Work” tour… He said those he has talked to on this end of the state seem to share the same concerns he has for the country…

Well over 500 bills have went to Governor Moore for his signature with more to come as legislators worked through the weekend. WVU’s Board of Governors will be voting on the proposed Campus Carry rule, designed to comply with the Campus Self Defense Act of 2023, during its April 12 meeting. On April 6th, 2024 at approximately 9:00 PM officers of the Cumberland Police Department observed an unsecured door in the 400 block of Arch Street. Officers learned that no one should be inside the residence and conducted a check of the residence, where they located Tyler Westfall inside. Westfall had been previously charged being inside of this residence and he was placed under arrest. During a subsequent search, items of paraphernalia were located on his person.
