On Friday, April 5th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Dylan Andrew Davin, 27, of Cumberland MD. Davin was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by both the Anne Arundel County District Court. The warrant alleged Davin violated the terms and conditions of his probation that had been placed upon him due to a previous conviction on assault and disorderly conduct. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held on $20,000 bond. Western Maryland the latest CSX Heritage locomotive unveiled

CSX Transportation's unveiling locomotive 1852, its 12th Heritage locomotive with a Western Maryland paint design including the railroads Fireball logo.  Western Maryland railroad started in 1852 in Baltimore, Maryland and eventually became part of the Chessie system which then became CSX providing freight and coal service to Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. CSX Transportation Heritage fleet has grown to a dozen units representing predecessor lines such as Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Baltimore & Ohio, New York Central and more.

IMPROVES SECTION OF EASTBOUND I-70 IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning a project on Monday, April 8 at 8 p.m., to improve the ride quality on eastbound I-70 between MD 66 (Mapleville Road) and Crystal Falls Drive near Beaver Creek. The pavement patching work should be complete by 5 a.m., April 9, weather permitting. Should weather delay the improvement project, crews will work April 9 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., April 10. Drivers can expect alternating single-lane closures on eastbound I-70 within the project limits. County United Way 27th Annual Day of Caring & Sharing

Friday, May 10th is rapidly approaching with 49 projects in Cumberland area. The 4 hour event with a noon lunch at Consultation park is a community beatification effort and volunteers are needed. Murder at the Museum

Allegany Museum and Embassy Theatre announce an upcoming murder mystery event on the evenings of Thursday, April 11, Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13. Written and directed by Tom Valentine, this interactive experience in the museum ballroom features an eight-member cast mingling throughout the crowd before the performance and dropping clues. Refreshments will be available at a cash bar, and charcuterie boards will be set at each table. Attendees will be invited to guess the murderer by ballot at the end of the performance. Prizes for the winners include a Whiskey Rebellion ticket or a Triple Play theatrical event…

Gov. Justice: First Lady resting after successful hip replacement surgery

Gov. Jim Justice today announced that First Lady Cathy Justice underwent successful hip replacement surgery at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. "Our family is very thankful Cathy's surgery went extremely well. I want to thank Dr. Dietz and all of the amazing folks at WVU Medicine for their great work and professionalism. I also want to thank everybody for their thoughts and prayers, and above all else, I thank God for today's outcome," Gov. Justice said. First Lady Justice is resting and in good spirits. She looks forward to returning to her duties serving the great people of West Virginia.

Warrant Arrests – April 3

Wednesday, April 3, 2024 Daniel Cardenas II, 27 of Cumberland, was arrested on a District Court Bench Warrant out of Frederick County for Failure to Appear for a Violation of Probation Hearing. His original conviction was for: Assault-Second Degree where he was sentenced to 10-years incarceration with all but 66-days suspended, and 3-years Supervised Probation along with restitution. His additional 22 charges were placed on the STET docket. Cardenas is also wanted on a Frederick County Circuit Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation. SBA Opens Economic Injury Disaster Loans Due to Bridge Collapse

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has caused far-ranging effects for businesses throughout the state. The Small Business Administration has opened Economic Injury Disaster Loans for those businesses that may be affected by this incident. Small businesses and private nonprofit organizations can now apply for a loan of up to $2 million to help overcome any temporary loss of revenue stemming from the bridge collapse. Loans may be used to pay normal operating expenses such as fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disruption.

Peach Festival Makes Move

The West Virginia Peach Festival, will be moving to a new location for this year’s August event. Usually held at the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, the festival is moving to the Mineral County Fairgrounds because of construction on the school campus. Local residents voiced their displeasure, wanting to keep the festival in Romney, but Peach festival organizers determined that the fairgrounds in Fort Ashby would serve as a better site than the Hampshire fairgrounds. Plans are to return the festival to Romney once construction is complete at the school location.

Region Experienced Minor Flooding and Downed Trees

Heavy rains throughout the region caused minor flooding and downed trees in some areas. Route 40 through the Narrows was closed for over 12 hours as Potomac Edison crews took care of downed power lines. The City of Cumberland did have the flood control pumps operating briefly on Wednesday to clear overflow, mostly from the North end of the city. The highwater mark for Wills Creek on Wednesday was 10.5 feet at 2pm but by Noon Thursday was down to around 6 feet. City Engineer Bobby Smith said the system worked well…
