Garrett Looks To Reduce Tax Rate

The Garrett County Commissioners will soon vote on lowering their property tax rate, based on a stronger revenue outlook. The proposed rate reduction from $1.056 to $1.02 per $100 of assessed value would bring the county’s tax structure more in line with current economic conditions, according to a Garrett County Government news release.  The county also held the line on its income tax rate of 2.65%.

County takes Over the George’s Creek Ambulance Service

The Allegany County Commissioners have finalized the long-awaited takeover of the George’s Creek Ambulance Service.  County Administrator Jason Bennett told the commissioners the Memorandum of Understanding gives the county control of the failed volunteer station…     “What that will do is allow the County to takeover possession of the building, three ambulances there—one of which is a newer ambulance—two life packs and all other assets that are within the building.  We will then end up staffing that with paid county EMS staff.”

“Allegany Gives” Sees Increase In Donors

Allegany College of Maryland recently held their second annual “Allegany Gives” event, a day for individuals to show support for the college through donations to the college or specific programs. ACM Foundation Director Courtney Jensen told WCBC that though they didn’t raise as much money as last year, this year the focus was on increasing donors…     “We were able to raise over $50,000 with over 400 individual donors supporting the day. The top fund for the year was for our scholarship. That was about a third of the donations.”

SHA Work On Route 36

Maryland State Highway crews will be working along Route 36, New Georges Creek Road starting this week. The work is expected to last up to six weeks. Slope repairs will occur over the Route 36 bridge in Westernport as well as a retaining wall north of Midland. Public Works Director Looking To Future

Allegany County Public Works Director Adam Patterson has worked several 20-plus hour days since the flooding of Lonaconing and Westernport. Morrisey Signs Troops To Teachers Bill

Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed a bill kick-starting a program called Troops-To-Teachers, focusing on making it easier for veterans to become teachers in West Virginia schools. Return of Memorial Day Parade a Success

After decades without a Memorial Day Parade, Monday saw hundreds ot people lined up along Baltimore Street for a solemn ceremony and a parade festival.  City councilman Rock Cioni served as master of ceremonies for a service which began at 10 a.m., featuring the pledge of allegiance, the national anthem, prayers, a poem,  and taps played by Chris Myers.  The parade followed with various youth groups, including the Dapper Dan Little League.  The state champion Bishop Walsh Mock Trial team was in the parade, as well as various fire companies and classic cars groups.  All participants are hopeful the Memorial…

Interstate 70 Crash Kills Two

Two passengers of a box truck died in a fiery crash Sunday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Frederick County, police said.  Maryland State Police said troopers were called around 4:10 p.m. to westbound I-70 near Exit 62 in New Market.  State police said a preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a BMW SUV rear-ended a box truck near Maryland Route 75. The box truck subsequently crossed the median and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer.  Both the box truck and tractor-trailer were propelled into the wood line alongside eastbound I-70 and caught fire.

BENCH WARRANTS SERVED

On Sunday, May 25, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served eight bench warrants on Ryan Roach.  Four warrants were issued as the result of Roach failing to comply with court orders on original charges of Theft less than $100 (x3), Con-Theft less than $100 (x2), Motor Vehicle Unlawful Taking, Unauthorized Removal of Motor Vehicle, and Rogue & Vagabond.  The other four warrants were issued due to Roach failing to appear in court on original charges of Burglary-4th Degree-Store, Burglary-4th Degree-Dwelling, Theft less than $100 (x2).  Roach was arrested and later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing. …
