A new arrival but the same delicious flavors has come to 138 Baltimore Street. Queen City Creamery Scoop Shop in the McMullen building has been an operation for a week and is seeing tremendous customer response. The shop not only offers counter service but also 25 flavors of frozen custard available for purchase by the pint. ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On March 11th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Del Rece Spade. The warrant was issued after a private citizen filed for charges at District Court. Spade was arrested and transported to central booking. Hooley Pub Crawl Celebrates 25 Years

The annual Hooley Pub Crawl is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year on Saturday, March 16th from Noon to 2AM. There will be music, food, and drink specials at downtown Cumberland restaurants, bars and music venues. Patrons are prohibited from bringing their own coolers to the event. Blue Bridge Dam Not Structural To Flood Control

The dam under the Blue Bridge into West Virginia was part of the discussion at the public information meeting for the River Walk Project at Canal Place.  Colin McCardle of CEC Consultants, says the Army Corps of Engineers is not concerned about the removal of the dam for the project… There had been community concern about what would happen to water levels once the dam is removed, but McCardle says there would be little to no change…

Ultrasound Bill Has Hearing This Friday

Maryland House Bill 858 will have a hearing on Friday, March 15. It is a bill that would require pregnant women to have an ultrasound and 24-hour waiting period before having an abortion.  Vicki Thornton, a local pro-life supporter recounted the story of a leading abortion provider who changed his mind once ultrasounds began to be used during the procedure…    

Moore Campaigns For Biden

Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore spent time in Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend campaigning for President Biden ahead of today’s primary there. Moore said that Maryland has seen the positive effects of the Biden Presidency with record levels of unemployment and said the Black community will mobilize behind his re-election bid…     

Moore Signs New Agreement With AFSCME

Maryland’s Governor signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) last Thursday. Wes Moore’s signature is the final step to formalize the new contract with the state that over 99% of AFSCME members voted in favor of by ballot vote. State workers will get a 3% cost of living adjustment in July and those eligible for step increases will also receive one in July.  The new contract runs through 2026.

Bean Will Succeed Price

Allegany County District Court Judge Erich Bean has been named administrative judge for the District Court for Allegany and Garrett Counties. Judge Bean will succeed District Court Administrative Judge Jack Price who will step down in preparation for retirement in March of 2025.  Bean has been an associate judge to the District Court since 2019 and has also been an assistant state’s attorney. He earned his juris doctorate from the University Of Baltimore School Of Law and was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 2009.

Trone/Alsobrooks Answer Forum Questions

A forum over the weekend highlighted two Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate seat in Maryland. David Trone and Angela Alsobrooks appeared at a Prince Georges County NAACP event where the two took questions from a moderator and the audience.  Alsobrooks was asked how she will address the cost of a college education… David Trone said that reparations for the black and brown communities in the state are needed.  One way he would go about this is through a change to business loans…

Baltimore Street Bridge closed Tuesday and Wednesday

Baltimore Street Bridge will be closed to thru traffic on Tuesday, March 12th, at 7am through Wednesday, March 13th, at 5pm. The bridge will be reopened to one-way traffic flowing from Mechanic Street to Greene Street. A detour will be in place to direct vehicles around the site, during the temporary closing.
