Roca Picks Up Endorsement of Former Speaker

Mariela Roca has received an impressive endorsement in her campaign for the Maryland Sixth District Congressional seat.  The Republican announced on Monday that former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has backed her for the position. Gingrich had hosted a fundraiser for Roca in October. He said Roca is the right person to represent the district in the House of Representatives.

Kids Code Bill On Way To Senate

House Bill 608, known as the Maryland Kids Code, has passed unanimously through the House Economic Matters Committee. Criminal Citation Trespassing posted property

On 03/12/2024 at approximately 10:00 AM an officer observed Christopher Tabler crossing the train tracks in an area with posted no trespassing signs visible. The officer contacted Tabler and advised him of the offense. Tabler was issued a Criminal Citation for trespassing on posted property and is pending trial in District Court. Various City Offices Temporarily Relocate

The City of Cumberland Department of Community Development will be temporarily relocating to 446 N. Mechanic Street beginning March 13, 2024. All phone numbers will remain the same and connected. The City of Cumberland Community Development Block Grant program, with Senior Community Development Specialist Lee Borror, will be relocated to 446 N. Mechanic Street as well. Hooley Pub Crawl Parking Restrictions Announced

Warrant Arrests – Monday, March 11

Makhi Tahlen Canty, 19 of Bowie, was served a District Court Arrest Warrant for Assault-1st Degree/DOC Employee, Assault-2nd Degree/DOC Employee, and Reckless Endangerment. He is currently being held without bond pending a bail review. Michael Brian Chamberlain, 46 of Cumberland, was served a District Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation. Baltimore Street Bridge Re-Opened To One-Way Traffic

Per Robert Smith, Director of Engineering for the City of Cumberland, the Baltimore Street Bridge has been reopened to one-way vehicular traffic. All of the current work requiring closure has been completed. The City will issue a press release for any future closures.

Youth-Only Trout Fishing March 23

Maryland’s first ever Youth-Only Trout Fishing Day is scheduled for March 23.  Young anglers under 16 may fish in the state’s put-and-take trout areas from 6:30am to 10pm. The official opening day of Trout Season for Maryland is March 30, starting at 6:30am. Thousands of hatchery-raised brown, golden, and rainbow trout have been stocked in streams across the state in preparation.

Low-Vision Devices Available

The Maryland Department of Disabilities Assistive Technology Program has received a large donation from Low Vision Specialists of Maryland and Virginia. The High-Tech Assistive Technology Reuse program receives donations of devices and cleans, repairs, refurbishes and donates them back out to Marylanders with disabilities at no cost. Devices including ramble tags, Optical Character Recognition glasses, desktop magnifiers and mobility canes are available. Water Service Interruption Wednesday

The City of Cumberland is advising that on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., water service will be interrupted on Baltimore Avenue for a valve replacement.   The area affected includes Baltimore Avenue from Decatur Street to the end of Goethe Street.
