FirstEnergy Conducting Aerial Inspections

FirstEnergy is conducting aerial inspections of nearly 7,000 miles of transmission lines in its service territory using helicopters equipped with infrared technology. This work helps ensure that high-voltage power lines and equipment remain clear of trees and vegetation. Inspections are scheduled to take place from May to mid-September. The helicopters will fly approximately 300 to 400 feet above the transmission lines at speeds between 25 and 35 miles per hour. If any clearance concerns are identified by the helicopter patrols, ground crews will follow up to further inspect or address.

Disturbing the Peace Arrests On Tuesday May 14 th , 2024 at approximately 1:35 am, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 200 block of Maryland Avenue for a reported disturbance. Officers had been to the residence earlier in the evening where Corinne Devyak had been intoxicated and creating a disturbance, and was advised to keep the peace. Upon officer’s arrival they were able to hear Devyak to again be creating a disturbance that could be heard from outside of the residence. Arrest Warrant Served

On Tuesday May 14th, 2024 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on David Bernauer. Th Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court when Bernauer failed to comply with his pre-trial release conditions. Bernauer was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond. Arrest: David John Bernauer, age 41, Cumberland Maryland. Charge: Failure to Comply

MD DNR Police Searching For Missing Boater

The Maryland Natural Resources Police is searching along with partner agencies for a missing boater in the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Port Deposit.   NRP received a report that three individuals were swept from their partially submerged vessel on Monday evening while fishing in the Susquehanna River. Two individuals swam to shore, but the third occupant was not located. The missing person is described as a 51-year-old male wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue jeans.   Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland State Police, Harford County Fire and EMS, and Harford County Sheriff’s Office are assisting.

Fire Contained in Cresaptown

A fire just before Noon on Haz Mat Drive in Cresaptown was quickly contained. A fire broke out at the Waste Management Transfer station. Employees were using an excavator to separate trash inside the structure whenever materials ignited within the trash debris. Employees attempted to use fire extinguishers to put the fire out, but were unsuccessful.  Fire crews arrived and quickly contained the fire and were back in service by Noon.

Filing Deadline for Business Taxes – May 31

In her latest Comptroller Connection newsletter, Maryland State Comptroller Brook Lierman is showing that since income tax season began in January, more than $2.23 billion in refunds have been issued to 1.8 million personal income tax filers. For those making tax payment for business, the filing date for business taxes has been extended to May 31.  Business filers are encouraged to use the business tax portal, Maryland Tax Connect.

WV Observing National Prevention Week

The West Virginia Department of Human Services is observing National Prevention Week May 12-18. The recognition raises awareness of substance misuse and mental health issues, prevention strategies, and showcasing the effectiveness of evidence-based prevention programs. Christina Mullins, Deputy Secretary of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders, said that ongoing teamwork and strategic partnerships with agencies across the state to prevent substance use are making a positive impact.

Governor Moore Visits Washington County Area

Last week, Governor Wes Moore toured various locations in Washington County, reinforcing the Moore-Miller administration’s commitment to making Maryland safer, more affordable, more competitive, and the state that serves. Over two days, the governor visited the Washington County Public Safety Training Center and the Hagerstown Regional Airport, attended a Hagerstown Boxcars baseball game, and met with Washington County elected officials.
