Bench Warrants Served

On Wednesday, April 10th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Demond Arthur Scott Jr, 36, of Cumberland MD. Scott was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on April 10th. The warrant alleged Scott failed to comply with an order of the court that had been set due to previous charges of assault, and disorderly conduct. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Chamber Civics Bee Set For Saturday at ACM

Saturday, the first Civics Bee in the area will be held at Allegany College.  The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce received essay entries from students in Western Maryland and 5 students will compete in the Bee.  Juli McCoy, Chamber Director said the competition is in two parts – a quiz and question and answer… Judges are Councilwoman Lauri Marchini, Elizabeth Stahlman from the City of Frostburg, and John Taube from Allegany County libraries. The event starts at 10am Saturday in the Zimmer Theatre at Allegany College of Maryland.

Meeting Scheduled For Washington Street Bridge

This past Maryland General Assembly session, House Minority Leader Jason Buckel submitted a bill that could have hurried up the process on getting the Washington Street Bridge repaired.  The bill didn’t pass, but Buckel tells WCBC there is a meeting scheduled in reference to getting the bridge replaced… Buckel is hopeful that a plan can be put together sooner rather than later…    

April Acknowledges Distracted Driving

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness month.  The National Highway Transportation Safety Board says over 3,000 people were killed in 2022 in traffic crashes involving distracted drivers. Using a handheld phone while driving in West Virginia is illegal and state police there will be part of the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” enforcement efforts.  Mike Belcoure of AAA recommends not touching the phone at all when driving…    

Sports Wagering Over $500 Million

Maryland’s sports books continue to out-perform traditional casino revenues.  For the month of March, casinos generated $178.1 million dollars but the sports wagering market processed over $500 million in bets for the month.  Contributions to the state in taxes totaled over $4.8 million which goes toward the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Education fund. Sports books paid out $491.6 million to winning players in March.

Senate Delegation Planning Legislation For Key Bridge

Maryland’s U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, with other state representatives, shared their plans around the rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge during a press conference Monday afternoon.  Senator Cardin said everything has been achieved on a bipartisan basis… Cardin indicated that legislation is being introduced, clarifying the federal government is paying for 100% of the rebuild… Senator Chris Van Hollen said that it is in situations like this that the government is truly needed…

Adult Abuse Cases Closed By Attorney General

Maryland’s Attorney General Anthony Brown announced his Medicaid Fraud and Vulnerable Victims Unit has achieved convictions in three cases of adult abuse.  Cases in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, and Howard Counties involved assisted living, direct support, and community living personnel.  The victims had either autism, intellectual disability, or Alzheimer’s.  AG Brown said his office is committed to protecting vulnerable adults…    

Gov. Justice, approve $150 million for new schools across 18 counties

Gov. Justice, as Chairman of the West Virginia School Building Authority (SBA), announced a groundbreaking investment today as the SBA approved an award of $149,851,553.00 for 18 new needs-based projects. This latest funding builds upon a previous award of $111 million in December 2023, bringing the total awards for Fiscal Year 2024 to an unprecedented $261 million, setting a new standard for educational infrastructure support in West Virginia. Justice said "I could not be more proud to announce another massive investment in our students,” Gov. Governor Moore, Lt. Governor Miller Visit FSU For Building Dedication

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, along with Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, will visit Frostburg State University on Saturday, April 13 at 11:30 a.m. for the official dedication of FSU's newest building, the Education and Health Sciences Center. While the pair are on campus, they will also take the opportunity to speak to incoming students and families during Bobcat Bound Day.
